'The group treated
with CTCE-9908 had a dramatic decrease (67%) in the number of
visible lung nodules due to the cancer spreading when compared
to the untreated group.'
Overview
Chemokine Therapeutics Corp. is a
biotechnology company developing drugs in the field of
chemokines and cytokines, a family of small, soluble proteins,
which signal stem cell transport and growth into mature cells.
These stem cells are master primitive cells, capable of
producing billions of mature cells necessary for repair and
regeneration. The Company’s main focus is to develop synthetic
versions of chemokines which may have potential applications
to address unmet medical needs in cancer, immune deficiencies,
vascular disease, and infectious diseases.
Tackling those diseases that still ail the
population is where Chemokine Therapeutics is aiming its
efforts. A Delaware-based corporation with offices in
Vancouver and Manhattan. Chemokine is busy developing
peptide-based drugs to treat cancer, cardiovascular and
infectious disease, efforts which bore fruit this month with
encouraging results from tests of its immune booster compound
on healthy volunteers.
At the Vancouver facility, Chemokine
Therapeutics designs and tests hundreds of peptides for
possible development as drug candidates. Currently, the
company has five lead products with two of these candidates
already in human trials; for immune system recovery following
chemotherapy and, a novel anti-cancer drug designed to prevent
the spread of the disease. Peptides based drugs produced by
the Company's technology have very high affinity for natural
chemokine receptors, a high degree of specificity, and long
duration of activity. Natural chemokines are well known to
play a key role in the recruitment and trafficking of a
variety of infection-fighting immune cells. In addition recent
research has shown that chemokines may play an important role
in cancer, cardiovascular disease and viral infections.
Chemokine Therapeutics' competitive advantage
lies in its ability to design synthetic versions of natural
chemokines that play an important role in disease prevention
and other physiological disorders. Its peptide therapies are
based on compounds containing two or more amino acids linked
by the carboxyl group of one amino acid to the amino group of
another. The Company has already attracted research
collaborations with pharmaceutical giant, Procter and Gamble
Pharmaceuticals as well as prestigious institutions such as
the National Cancer Institute, Memorial Sloan Kettering
Institute in New York and the Walther Cancer Institute in
Indiana.
Companies with leading edge technologies
present attractive risk/reward opportunities for investors.
Chemokine Therapeutics represents only a handful of
biotechnology companies with technology that has the potential
to exploit chemokine biology, in the war against infectious
disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease. But going full-bore
with this research entails big capital inflows, which
biotechnology companies share, in part, by licensing drugs to
larger pharmaceutical companies. Small cap investors willing
and able to share some of the risk of that research with the
company benefit from helping to fund clinical trials through
to the licensing or acquisition stage. A future special report
will investigate some of the history of this dynamic company,
its recent successes in developing a cancer treatment, along
with some of the volatility its stock price has endured of
late. Also in this upcoming special report, investors should
better understand this new technology and its successes and
perhaps be stimulated by what they read to consider backing
this exciting new work.
Chemokine Therapeutics has two lead product
candidates in clinical trials:
Investment Highlights
- Completion of a single dose Phase I clinical trial in
healthy volunteers for our lead compound CTCE-0214.
Results of the Phase I clinical trial have just been
released.
- A study conducted by the National Cancer Institute
(NCI), demonstrated that CTCE-9908 decreased the spread of
cancer to the lung in mice that had osteosarcoma by 67%.
These results were announced at the American Association
for Cancer Research 2005 Annual Meeting on April 17, 2005.
- The closing of a CDN$2.4 million over-allotment option
to bring the total proceeds raised under the company's
initial public offering to CDN$18.4 million.
- Completion of Phase I study of anti-cancer drug
CTCE-9908 in healthy adults which did not reveal any
significant toxicity.
- In preclinical models CTCE-9908 has demonstrated the
prevention of cancer spreading from its primary origins.
- The pharmaceutical market in general has grown at
rates above GDP growth. According to IMS World Review
2004, audited pharmaceuticals sales grew at 9% to US$466.3
billion in 2003.
- World-wide sales of neutropenia treatments in 2003 the
companyre approximately US$3 billion and are projected to
increase to over US$4.5 billion by 2008 according to
Business Communications Company, Inc.
What are Natural Chemokine
-
Chemokines are a recently discovered family of small,
soluble proteins, structurally-related to cytokines.
They assume a range of important functions in the human
body, mainly in relation to the immune system. Among
other functions, chemokines are responsible for blood
cell formation through stem cell growth and
differentiation. In addition, chemokines participate in
white blood cell mobilization and in the initiation of
immune responses. They are produced and released by a
wide variety of cell types.
-
In addition to their designated natural functions,
chemokines have been found to play an important role in
the physiological processes of a variety of prominent
and critical diseases. There is a growing focus in the
scientific community on chemokine involvement in cancer,
both at the level of blood vessel generation and
metastasis, in viral infections such as HIV and in
autoimmune diseases, as evidenced by studies in an
increasing number of research publications and articles.
CTCE 9908
When a cancer spreads from its original site to another
area of the body, it is termed metastatic cancer.
CTCE-9908, based on the companys pre-clinincal studies has
the potential to reduce or delay the progression of
cancers.
Market Need For CTCE-9908As a potential
anti-metastasis cancer therapy, we believe that CTCE-9908
is unique and has the potential to address a large and
growing cancer market. Cancer is a major health care
problem as approximately 23% of all deaths in the U.S. in
2001 were caused by cancer according to the National
Cancer Institute. The National Cancer Institute estimates
that there were 1,368,030 new cases of cancer in 2004 in
the U.S., including 230,110 prostate cancers; 217,440
female breast cancers; 173,770 lung cancers; and 146,940
cancers of the colon/rectum. In addition, the risk of
being diagnosed over one’s lifetime with cancer is
approximately 46% of U.S. males and 38% of U.S. females
according to the National Cancer Institute.
According to the American Cancer Society, about
one-third of patients with cancer, excluding nonmelanoma
skin cancers, have metastases that are detected at the
time their cancer is first diagnosed. Another third of
patients have metastases that are too small to be detected
by usual diagnostic tests. These micrometastases, however,
will eventually grow into clinically significant
metastases if the patient receives no treatment or local
treatment of the primary tumour only.
CTCE-0214
CTCE- 0214 has the potential to restore infection-fighting
white blood cells and platelets to prevent bleeding.
Cancer patients may be able to receive aggressive
chemotherapy in combination with CTCE-0214 and minimize
delays caused by infection, low white blood cell counts
and/or low platelet counts. CTCE-0214 also has the
potential to be used in stem cell mobilization indications
and offers potential improvement compared to the currently
available therapies. The results of the companys
pre-clinical studies show that CTCE-0214 has a rapid mode
of action, enabling the required increase of the stem
cells, white blood cells and platelets to recover rapidly.
Currently available treatments require more time.
The company has disclosed in pre-clinical studies
that CTCE-0214;
-
Increased the number of infection-fighting
neutrophils in the blood stream by approximately 710%
over the number of neutrophils in the blood stream of
the control.
-
Increased the number of platelets in the blood stream
by approximately 260% over the number of platelets in the
blood stream of the control;
-
Increased the number of stem cells in the blood stream
by approximately 340% over the number of stem cells in the
blood stream of the control.
World-wide sales of neutropenia treatments in
2003 were approximately US$3 billion and are projected to
increase to over US$4.5 billion by 2008 according to the
company.
Technology
The technology of Chemokine Therapeutics is to design
peptide analogs and peptidomimetics to mimic or to block the
function of chemokines known as chemokine agonists and
antagonists, respectively.
Chemokine Therapeutics has a proprietary
technology that enables the Company to produce a smaller
version of all types of chemokines by chemical synthesis in a
speedy manner. The products of this technology are extremely
effective in replacing the chemokines with low toxicity
profile. The chemokine antagonists produced by the Company's
technology have very high affinity for chemokine receptors, a
high degree of specificity, and long duration of activity.
The graph below demonstrates the 3-D structure
of three chemokines in solution and the sites for replacement
via rationally designed small peptide analogs or
peptidomimetics.
Using its technology the Company has already
produced over 1000 chemokine mimetics and antagonists
