'According to the
World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people
suffering from diabetes has risen from 30 million in 1985 to
almost 200 million in 2005, with projected figures suggesting
that 370 million will be affected by 2030.'
OverviewOramed
Pharmaceuticals' is an Israeli based company focused on the
development of oral delivery solutions based on proprietary
technology. Diabetes is one of the most rapidly growing
diseases in the world and is one that requires constant and
often unpleasant monitoring and drug therapy regimen. Oramed
is currently developing an orally soft gel insulin capsule
for the treatment of diabetes. The Company is also pursuing
the development of oral delivery solutions for other drugs
and vaccines.
Investment Highlights
-
Demand for alternative insulin delivery technologies is
rising.
-
Type 2 diabetes therapy market is expected to exceed US
$15.3 billion in 2013.
-
Effectiveness of insulin tablets is already proven
successful on trials on animals at Hadassah University
Hospital in Jerusalem.
-
Oral insulin tablets enable the delivery of insulin in a
more physiological manner than by injection
-
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the
number of people suffering from diabetes has risen from 30
million in 1985 to almost 200 million in 2005, with
projected figures suggesting that 370 million will be
affected by 2030.
-
On March 13, 2007 the company announced that they have
begun pre-clinical testing on an oral replacement for the
highly demanded flu vaccine, which has over a billion
doses disseminated annually, as reported by the CDC.
-
The company recently gained the support of Swiss Caps, one
of the largest manufacturers of soft gel capsules in the
world. Swiss Caps accepted Oramed as a client and supports
Oramed in producing Oramed's capsules for a direct share
exchange in lieu of a cash payment.
Products
ORAMED is poised to develop a revolutionary new means of
insulin delivery—an oral insulin , offering hope to nearly
200 million diabetics worldwide.
Led by a leading team of medical research scientists,
Oramed is a company focused on the commercial development of
proprietary oral therapies. Currently, Oramed’s main focus
is the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. Going forward, Oramed
hopes to discover an oral replacement for insulin
injections, as well as other methods of oral delivery for
drugs and vaccinations currently delivered via needles.
Research & Development
The ability to correctly self-administer doses of insulin
is crucial to the long-term health of diabetics. For years,
the only method patients had to deliver insulin to their
bodies was by injection. But, years of research by Oramed’s
highly respected team of scientists discovered a technology
at the Hadassah University Hospital that has the potential
to change all of that.
Up until now, the idea of insulin pills or tablets was
inconceivable due to the fact that insulin, which is a
protein, breaks down in the digestive system. However,
Oramed’s patented technology overcame the problem of
digestion as well as permeability to the intestine. This has
been a major hurdle that has inhibited the development of an
orally ingestible insulin for decades.
Prof. Hanoch Bar-On, a leading Diabetologist on the
Oramed team, states that the route of the insulin from the
swallowed pill “imitates nature” in that it passes to the
liver and then to the bloodstream. Injected insulin goes
straight to the bloodstream.
Preclinical studies on animals were successful, and the
Oramed team is preparing for phase one clinical trials in
the near future.
Market Demand
Diabetes is a common condition in which the amount of
glucose (sugar) in the blood is rising because the body is
unable to use it properly. This is because the body’s method
of converting glucose into energy is not working as it
should. Diabetes can lead to serious complications, such as
heart disease, strokes, limb's amputations, eye and kidney
damage, and premature death. Other ill effects also include
thrombosis, painful skin ulcers and blindness. In developing
countries, diabetes is the fourth-ranking cause of death.
There are two major types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes,
known as juvenile-onset diabetes, which develops when the
body’s immune system destroys the cells that produce the
hormone insulin that regulates blood glucose. In order to
survive, people with Type 1 diabetes must have insulin
injections.
Type 2 diabetes, which accounts about 90% of all
diagnosed cases of diabetes, develops when the body produces
less than requested insulin, or when the insulin does not
work properly. Type 2 diabetes can be treated by diet alone
or by a combination of diet and medication (some of the
medicine stimulates the production of insulin). As the
dependency on insulin or alternative medicines rise, the
pancreas gradually loses its ability to produce insulin. At
this stage, daily injections of insulin may become
necessary.
The introduction of oral insulin for Type 2 diabetics may
in fact help to reduce the dependency on insulin shots and
preclude the need for repeated injections at a later stage
of Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is a serious chronic illness that represents a
growing worldwide epidemic. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), the number of people suffering from
diabetes has risen from 30 million in 1985 to almost 200
million in 2005, with projected figures suggesting that 370
million will be affected by 2030.
In the US alone, diabetes currently affects 20.8 million
people. This represents 7.0 percent of the US population.
Among them 35% to 45% need insulin injections to better
control their diabetes.
According to analysts at Decision Resources, the total
diabetes market (oral and insulin) was about US $11 billion
in 2003. This market is expected to grow to US $14 billion
by 2006, and the Type 2 diabetes therapeutic market is
expected to exceed US $15.3 billion in 2013.
Growth of the diabetes market will be sustained through
the continued expansion of the patient population due to
aging, poor diet, conducting sedentary life style and excess
body weight. The number of patients diagnosed is increasing
due to routine screening and enhanced awareness.
