Security guards often get little to no respect. Much like many police, most thanklessly go about their job every day, ignoring stigmas put forth by movies where they’re portrayed as bumbling police wannabes that command no real authority and pose no real threat to subjects, often because they don’t carry a firearm. Also akin to police officers, news coverage is scant unless something controversial occurs, which generally doesn’t bode well for the industry’s reputation. President Obama’s $75 million budget request in December to cover half of the cost of 50,000 police officer-mounted cameras put a bright light on how important technology is to document control in these types of confrontational situations that make national headlines. A step ahead with seeing the need to document audio and video from incidents for less subjective reporting, companies like TASER International (NASDAQ:TASR) and Guardian 8 Corporation (OTCQB:GRDH) have already integrated cameras into their non-lethal products. Scottsdale, Arizona-based Guardian 8 is much smaller than its Scottsdale peer, but has attracted some former TASER leadership to its team, including interim CFO and board member Kathy Hanrahan, former TASER President, CFO and COO, and COO Paul Hughes, who worked in business development at TASER as well as Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ:SWHC). Corey Lambrecht, former Executive VP at Smith & Wesson, also sits on Guardian 8’s board.

The company’s flagship product is the Pro V2 compact personal security device, which can be used as an alternative to unarmed security or a non-lethal complement to armed security. A handheld device somewhat resembling a firearm, the Pro V2 is chock-full of technology to communicate with other responsible parties, warn the subject that action will be taken if control isn’t restored and digitally document the whole incident, effectively reducing risk and liability for the security officer. If the subject ignores the laser, alarm and strobe of the Pro V2 and doesn’t stand down, the security officer has the option of spraying them with dose of OC (oleoresin capsicum, “pepper spray”) to defuse the situation.

Brought to market only a year ago, the Pro V2 is now being used in more than 100 pilot projects, according to Guardian 8 last month. The device is being used in a wide array of sectors by security personnel, including health care facilities, hospitals, public venues, universities and government service providers. Although exact details weren’t provided, Guardian 8 says that Platinum Event Services at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas used Pro V2 units to stop a crime in progress and later to avoid a false claim of excessive use of force.

On Wednesday, the company announced the sale of 40 Pro V2s to Covenant Health in Lubbock, Texas. The purchase also includes training for 10 instructors.

"We are always looking for ways to improve security at our medical center to keep our patients and employees safe. We feel the Pro V2 is cutting-edge technology that will make us a leader when it comes to security, while reducing our liability risk," said Steve Barker, Covenant Health Director of Security and Parking, in a press release.

Investors will be watching to see how these pilots and sales translate to the top and bottom lines for Guardian 8. Sales during the first year of making it to market were sluggish at only $39,346 through the nine months ended September 30 (net loss was $1.8 million, or 4 cents per share), but look to be building some momentum with increased exposure and the inking of an agreement with government sales distributor ADS Tactical in November. Shares closed trading on Wednesday at $0.52, equating to a market capitalization of $21.4 million.
