To meet SWaP (size, weight, and power) challenges in aerospace and defense systems, companies are increasingly focused on thermal challenges related to packing more and more power into smaller form factors subject to harsh conditions. When failure is not an option – such as with space missions or long-range military applications – tech firms are pushing the limits to deliver reliability in thermal dissipation to ensure optimal performance. To that point, when aerospace and defense juggernaut Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) needed to protect against heat overload in its products, it once again turned to KULR Technology Group, Inc. (NYSE American: KULR), one of the newest members of the Russell Microcap® Index.

KULR, a San Diego-based developer of next-gen lithium-ion battery safety and thermal management technologies, this week received a follow-on order from Lockheed for its phase change material (PCM) heat sink technology for an undisclosed use in long-range weaponry. PCMs are substances that absorb and store thermal energy, releasing latent heat during phase transitions. Water is the most common PCM, while other examples include paraffin waxes, hydrated salts, metallics, and non-paraffin organics.

KULR offers a carbon fiber infused heat sink utilizing PCM to reduce system temperature excursions and extend both the life of key components and overall operating times. Carbon fiber has very low mass, saving on weight and volume while offering an order of magnitude increase in heat capacity versus conventional materials, ultimately reducing or possibly even eliminating the need for any active cooling system. KULR’s heat sink is most useful for compact and high-performance devices that require bursts of computational power in rapid time intervals.

Furthermore, KULR has developed a proprietary high thermal conductivity fiber core material to achieve fast and uniform melting of PCM in any orientation while in low gravity. It is inside NASA’s X-38 re-entry vehicle, LEO flight, Mercury Messenger satellite, and NICER telescope on the International Space Station. At current estimates the capacitor has cycled more than 10,000 times without breakage in various applications.

“Repeat business like this is a testament to our reliable engineering, testing, and design capabilities that meet the stringent requirements of long-range weapon systems,” said Keith Cochran, President and Chief Operating Officer of KULR.

Cochran added, “Our many years of experience designing lightweight and durable heat sink technologies positions us well to capture additional share of the thermal design market for military precision strike weapons.”

KULR developed its technology in collaboration with NASA for applications in space. Owing to their reliability, compact size, and negligible weight, KULR products are trusted by NASA and some of the most well-known names in aerospace and defense, including Ball Aerospace, Airbus, Raytheon, Lockheed, and more. In the last few years, KULR has diversified the technology into commercial uses, including the Drako GTE all-electric supercar, Metaverse projects, and logistics industry as the only company with a special approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation for shipping Li-ion batteries.
