NuRAN Wireless (CSE:NUR) (OTCPK:NRRWF)

Featured Company / NuRAN Wireless

5G is a tremendous technology that, rightfully so, is receiving a lot of attention in the mobile industry.  Thing is, though, 5G is not the near-term future for most of the world.  In fact, about 3.7 billion people in the world do not have internet connectivity or cellular coverage at all.   In rural areas across the planet, that is about 70 percent of the population.

Investors can by hyped-up for the future of 5G, but they shouldn’t forget that half the world still needs 2G or 3G just to get the connectivity ball rolling in their region.  Looking at just a couple figures lends some color to the opportunity in catering to the emerging market demographic.  The internet is currently a $1.1 trillion industry.  Again, that is without a large portion of the world having broadband, 2G, 3G or 4G.  According to a report by Grand View Research, the global wireless infrastructure market is anticipated to reach $116.8 billion by 2025.

It’s not that Mobile Network Providers (MNO) haven’t wanted to penetrate woefully underserved markets worldwide, the economics simply didn’t make sense.  In short, it was too expensive for them to develop and deploy the technology and infrastructure.

Enter NuRAN Wireless (CSE:NUR) (OTCPK:NRRWF), an upstart supplier of mobile and broadband wireless infrastructure solutions that has developed the technology to square the circle for connectivity in rural regions in a cost-effective manner.  In fact, NuRAN says that its products create the world’s lowest cost, lowest power consumption connectivity infrastructure.   The company operates under the mantra of “connecting the next billion.”

The Quebec-based company has three primary products in its portfolio to provide turnkey solutions for connection demand.

• The GSM LiteCell is for voice and basic data that will cover a 22-kilometer radius, making it ideal for populations in the range of 2,000 up to 20,000 people.  The GSM LiteCell consumes just 56 watts of power.

• The OC-2G is also for voice and basic data, consuming only 14 watts of power, covering a 4-kilometer radius for smaller populations of 200 – 2,000 people.

• OC-LTE is for transmitting broadband data, using 55 watts of power and covering a 4-kilometer radius, making it useful in communities with a population between 2,000 - 20,000.

In the last year or so, NuRAN is making a name for itself industry-wide for its rapidly deployable technology that can operate independently or be linked up with larger ecosystems (utilizing satellites for example).   Thanks to its utility, the technology also has important applications in disaster situations to get mobile infrastructure re-established immediately.

To that end, the company has hit major milestones, including large orders in the millions of dollars to serve remote areas of Canada and Africa, shipping OC-LTE base stations to multiple Tier One operators globally and even completing the first Blockchain mobile cryptocurrency transaction on NuRAN Wireless deployment in Nigeria, which opens the door to rural mobile financial transactions to billions of unbanked people.

To date, over 8,000 NuRAN units have been shipped to five continents.

NuRAN also has secured a patent covering its 5G technology in the U.S. and Canada.  Specifically, the patent protects the algorithm behind the company’s Massive MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology.  While the company’s focus is currently on remote locations around the world, the patent is important for vertical expansion and widening NuRAN’s footprint in its own backyard as 5G continues to evolve.

The list of clients and partners of NuRAN and its Nutaq Innovations subsidiary is impressive to say the least.  These include the world’s biggest providers, such as Vodafone, Orange, Verizon, AT&T, AirTel, America Movil and more.

In January, the company partnered with Israel’s Spacecom AMOS 17 for projects in Africa. This project alone could result in up to $9 million CAD in sales over 12 months and a total of ten times that, or close to $90 million CAD, over the lifetime of the scale up.

NuRAN is also one of only 30 founding companies named as part of Facebook’s Telecom Infra Project.  The socio-economic project was launched last year to address the dearth of connectivity options that keep 3.6 billion people from access to broadband and 1.0 billion people without any cellular coverage at all.  Essentially, NuRAN is the local expert in the group of founders addressing remote regions of the world.

As it looks, NuRAN is starting to build tailwinds of brand recognition, underpinned by attendance to some of the industry’s top conferences, including the recently completed Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.  If the flow of news regarding deals subsequent to the much smaller Africacom in November is any proxy for what may be upcoming from NuRAN, investors will be on the edge of their seats.

After Africacom, NuRAN announced over C$1.0 million in orders, said it was entering the Kenyan marketplace and brought on telecom industry veteran Christian de Faria as a non-executive director.

With that in mind, investors will be looking for growing revenue after NuRAN reported revenue of C$1.24 million in the quarter ended January 31, 2019 including gross profit of C$500,726 on the sales.

The company is entering the second quarter in a strong financial position, with a long-term, low interest loan of up to C$3.0 million with the Quebec Government and its “Creative Quebec” program and the recent completion of a non-brokered private placement that raised gross proceeds of C1.11 million.

At a market valuation of under C$11 million, NuRAN seems more of an overlooked anomaly in the microcap world at such a low market cap given its fundamentals, technology and the company it keeps.  There is clearly a tremendous market opportunity wherein NuRAN holds a leadership position, one that it doesn’t look likely to relinquish anytime soon.
