It’s truly amazing the way social media has reshaped the way the world communicates. Friday marked a historic day with the U.S. government choosing Twitter as the medium to announce that U.S. jets took aim and bombed ISIS artillery in Iraq. Rather than opting for a television address or a press briefing, as is customary, Rear Admiral John Kirby let the news out in 132 characters. If brevity is king, video is queen, a marriage that Keek Inc. (TSX-Venture:KEK) (OTCQX:KEEKF) is hoping will spawn great rewards for the company and its shareholders. Keek is a combination of sorts of Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) and Google (Nasdaq:GOOGL) property YouTube, allowing users to post a video up to 36 seconds in length, accompanied by a maximum 111-character text. The platform is enabled via the web, iOS, Android and Windows 8 mobile platforms.

The upstart social network has established a solid user base of about 68 million members, spanning 190 countries and 36 languages. There’s plenty of big-name Keek users, including Kim Kardashian (with more than 3 million followers), Jess McCartney, Kendall Jenner, Austin Mahone, Aaron Carter and Victoria Justice, to name a few.

As noted by the Cantech Letter, Keek has garnered significant support in its development, raising more than $30 million to date. Pinetree Capital has been a strong backer with CEO Sheldon Inwentash buying several million shares in the open market in the past two months, either personally or through his company.

On Friday, Keek said that it has named television and radio personality Allison Hagendorf as its first “KJ” (Keek VJ). Hagendorf is probably best known as the host of the December 31 celebration “Time Square New Year’s Eve,” which features the iconic Ball Drop that is watched by more than one billion people globally. 32-year-old Hagendorf is also the host of the primetime music competition “The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep,” shows on Fuse TV, SiriusXM’s (Nasdaq:SIRI) Cosmopolitan magazine station show “Cosmo for Guys” and a variety of other pop culture and music events.

In her new role as the inaugural KJ at Keek, Hagendorf will be producing exclusive celebrity and entertainment content series uniquely for the Keek video platform. The material will include “keeking” peeks of lifestyle and entertainment moments such as breaking news, celebrity interviews, behind-the-scenes event coverage and more, beginning with Teen Choice 2014. At the start of August, Keek disclosed a new partnership with Teen Choice 2014 in which “Keekers” could audition for the opportunity to meet and interview stars on the red carpet leading into the popular annual event.

"Digital video in the social media space, particularly mobile is where the world is at and journalists are starting to flock to it. Look at Katie Couric's move to join Yahoo," Hagendorf said in a statement today. "Keek is a great fit for me because of its strong ties to pop culture and young stars and personalities. I am excited to get started and Teen Choice is a great way for me to introduce myself to the 68 million users on Keek."

“We are excited to have such a high calibre journalist and creative mind joining us as we roll out our roadmap of professionally produced content in the coming months," added Keek CMO Lin Dai.

Toronto-listed shares of Keek are trading ahead by 3.3 percent Friday afternoon at 15.5 cents. Technically speaking, the chart is rising off both the 50 and 200 day moving averages and has been making higher lows since hitting a bottom of 9.5 cents in May, including a swing to 19.5 cents five weeks ago.
