According to a report published by Cooperative Grocer Network, the natural/organic industry in the U.S. alone is worth some $32 billion. The industry has experienced phenomenal growth not just in the U.S. but also globally. However, the Cooperative Grocer Network report notes that the industry is still only a fraction of the $450 billion conventional food industry. Indeed, there is room for significant growth for the natural/organic food industry going forward. The report further notes that over the long term, supermarkets will be the largest sellers of natural and organic products. One of the biggest players in the industry is Whole Foods Market Inc. (NASDAQ:WFM). WFM currently has a market capitalization of $10.14 billion and trades at over 20x its trailing twelve-month earnings.

Another major player in this space is The Fresh Market Inc. (NASDAQ:TFM). The Greensboro, North Carolina-based company offers food products focused on perishable categories in a store format.

An emerging player in this multi-billion dollar fast growing industry is Naturally Splendid Enterprises Ltd. (TSX-Venture:NSP). Based in Canada, Naturally Splendid is engaged in the development, production, commercialization and licensing of an entirely new generation of plant-derived, bioactive ingredients, nutrient-dense foods, and related products.

This morning, NSP announced that it recorded approximately C$1.225 million in gross sales during the first quarter of 2016. This compares to gross sales of C$235,000 reported for the full year in 2014 and C$310,523 reported for the first three quarters of 2015. NSP has been experiencing significant growth, which the company said is due to several factors. NSP said that its retail lines NATERA(R) and Pawsitive FX(TM) are showing consistent growth, and the recent acquisition of Chii, which focuses on on-line hemp food sales products, has added to the gross sales. But the most significant growth has been in the export division of Naturally Splendid where South Korea exports have experienced a very successful start in the first quarter of 2016.

Craig Goodwin, CEO at Naturally Splendid Enterprises, said that the growth seen in the first quarter of 2016 represents a new and impressive growth milestone for the Company which it will build on throughout 2016 and into the future. Goodwin further said that the company is definitely pleased with the start of exporting to South Korea and believes this to be just the beginning of a rapidly growing opportunity.

Shares of NSP have been trading in a sideways pattern over the last six months. Perhaps news of this type may spur further interest in the stock from investors.
