According to a report in September by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, half of the adults in the United States will be clinically obese by 2030 if current population and trends hold their course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last year that almost 36 percent of U.S. adults and about 17 percent of children are currently obese. The large and growing figures present opportunities for companies in many areas, such as diabetes and bariatric products. The cumulative obesity space isn’t exactly the core competency of Gainesville, Florida-based life sciences company Quick-Med Technologies, Inc. (OTCQB:QMDT), but it struck a chord when reading today’s news from Quick-Med as a portion of its offerings.

Quick-Med is developing and commercializing proprietary, broad-based technologies for the consumer and healthcare markets. The company’s four primary technologies are NIMBUS (Novel Intrinsically Micro-Bonded Utility Substrate), a franchise of bio-engineered polymers for use in wound care, catheters, tubing and more; NimbuDerm, a copolymer used as a long-lasting hand sanitizer; MultiStat, a family of advanced methods and compounds for use in skin therapy; and Stay Fresh, an antimicrobial based on sequestered hydrogen peroxide.

Today, the company said that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted 510(k) marketing and distribution clearance for its Stay Fresh antibacterial skinfold management textile. The FDA clearance was issued for both prescription and Over-The-Counter use.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has already approved Stay Fresh for imparting antimicrobial preservation of textiles.

Skinfold management, controlling moisture, inflammation and inflammation in areas of skin-to-skin contact, such as in the groin, armpit, under breasts or abdominal skin folds, are prevalent in all people, but can pose a significant problem in the obese. It can also be a problem resulting from a variety of other medical conditions where moisture is often present, such as incontinence. Infection, odor and lesions are just a few of the unpleasant effects possible through mismanagement of skinfolds.

Simply, what happens is bacteria grows in skinfolds, subsequently getting onto clothing. Generally speaking, unless extremely hot water is used when washing or high heat and long dry cycles, the bacteria survive the process, only to return to the scene when the clothes are put back on. Utilizing the power of a formulation containing low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, Stay Fresh effectively inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. The antimicrobial efficacy has been validated to 75 laundering cycles.

"This clearance represents a very powerful validation of our Stay Fresh technology, since the FDA review process is extremely meticulous and comprehensive; 510k clearance requires strong evidence of both effectiveness and of safety for users and care providers,” commented Bernd Liesenfeld, president at Quick-Med.

Building its antimicrobial franchise, Quick-Med is vertically and horizontally expanding the technology behind Stay Fresh’s efficacy into other applications, including antimicrobial surface treatments and superabsorbent antimicrobial powders.

During the recent quarter ended March 31, Quick-Med’s revenue improved to $262,005 up 32.1 percent from $198,300 in the year prior quarter. Importantly, the company swung from a net loss of $418,846 in the year prior quarter to a net profit of $84,676 in the recent quarter, led by a sharp decline in R&D expenses.

Adding to coffers in coming quarters is a fresh contract announced last week with the U.S. Department of Defense to develop wound healing technologies to control scar contracture in burn patients utilizing Quick-Med’s NIBUS platform. The contract is initially valued at $150,000 but follow-on phases could push the total near $1 million in addition to the somewhat intangible benefit of developing the product towards commercialization.

Shares of QMDT are by large thinly traded with only 37.35 million shares outstanding. With today’s news, shares have jumped 157 percent to 12.88 cents on volume of only 67,431. Proper due diligence of this quiet company is, as always, encouraged.
