Jones Soda and Fiat Partner in 2013 Photo Contest

Many kids drink it in an almost cult-like fashion. Many adults drive it and flock together in a mini rage that is a micro-parallel to Mini Cooper car fanatics. What are these things? Jones Soda and Fiat brand cars. Both are high energy and colorful brands that exude attitude. It seems like a good match for the two companies that are much smaller than their respective industry peers to team up for brand exposure…and now they have. Premium beverage maker Jones Soda Co. (OTCBB:JSDA) said Friday morning that it has partnered with the Fiat brand as they launch their “Jonesin’ for a Fiat 500e” summer photo contest as part of a broader marketing program showcasing new products.


Jones is launching its “Natural Soda” line and Fiat is rolling out its first all-electric model, the 500e. Fiat, a company looking to find $10 billion to buy the portion of Chrysler it doesn’t already own, is selling its new EV car with a free “Pass Program” that entitles 500e buyers to 12 free days of rental of a conventional car (select models, of course) to help curb range anxiety issues.

The contest will run from June 1 to October 31 and feature weekly prizes, like Jones drink and Fiat merchandise, for contestants submitting photos of any Fiat 500 car. A grand prize winner will be drawn at the end of the contest with one lucky contestant receiving a brand new 2013 Fiat 500 (or 500e model if the winner is from California), surf lessons with Jones-sponsored pro surfer Brianna Cope and their winning photo put on a run of Natural Jones Soda labels. One of the things Jones is known for is their customer-designed packaging that features all kinds of real-world images.

Tapping into the Twittersphere, much like Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) did with its Project Glass contest, people wishing to participate (U.S. and Canada only and excluding Quebec) can submit their photos of a Fiat 500 through hashtag “#Jonesinforafiat500e” through the Jones Soda website, Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

“The sense of excitement that surrounds the launch of the all-new Fiat 500e in California this summer creates a perfect opportunity for us to partner with like-minded brands such as Jones Soda,” said Jason Stoicevich, Head of Fiat Brand North America.

The companies plan to work together on other social media campaigns and different events, like the U.S. Open of Surfing in California this summer. Brianna Cope will be competing there and, as it so happens, sporting a new 500e, according to today’s statement.

Shares of JSDA have had a strong performance so far in 2013. After hitting lows of 24 cents in early February, the stock has roared back to make a new 52-week high at 64 cents on Monday, representing a climb of 167 percent. The stock price faded Tuesday through Thursday, but is back on the climb to end the month, up about 4 percent at 55 cents after hitting 62 cents in morning action.
