12 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands have primary enforcement laws, meaning a ticket can be issued without any other offense taking place, prohibiting drivers from using hand-held phones while driving. 37 states and D.C. ban cell phone use by novice drivers. 41 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands have laws making it illegal to text and drive (all but 4 states have the laws distinguished as primary enforcement). Yet, according to the National Safety Council, so far in 2013, there have been nearly 900,000 crashes involving drivers using cell phones and texting. That’s about one accident every 30 seconds.
While many kids (and adults for that matter) will argue that they aren’t distracted while texting, talking and driving; it’s simply a matter or arrogance, not fact. Five seconds is a fair average for the length of time it takes to answer a quick text. At 60 miles per hour, a vehicle travels 352 feet in that time, longer than the length of a football field. At 70 mph, its 510 feet of distracted driving.
Protext Mobility (OTCQB:TXTM) is looking to put an end to the crashes that even the law can’t seem to stop. The Delray Beach, Florida-based technology company develops applications for the mobile communications market, including SafeText and its new DriveAlert solution. SafeText is designed for parents to monitor their children’s mobile phone activities, primary for the purpose of combatting cyberbullying, sexting and distracted driving. With the service, parents are provided with a comprehensive set of tools viewable through a hosted webpage that delivers data on texts, photos, location, speed, history, call logs, apps and more.
The new DriveAlert solution uses OBD-II Dongle (On Board Diagnostics) technology to connect a smartphone to a vehicle. The subscription service includes a smartphone app, and plug-in OBD device for communicated speed via Bluetooth to the phone, this effectively works as a lock box on the device. The app launches automatically when a vehicle is in motion, blocking many functions, such as texts (although it does send a customized auto-reply to the sender), photo and video usage, web browsing and phone calls with incoming calls sent to voicemail. The accountholder (generally a parent or guardian) can also setup alerts to be notified if the driver attempts to disable or override the system and can even get alerts if the vehicle is moving faster than a preset limit. The driver maintains the ability to make 911 calls.
Referring to the “selfie” craze that is in the news constantly, Steve Berman, chief executive of Protext, said in a statement today, "The problem is not just drivers taking a picture and/or video of themselves, but also the ensuing activity and process that takes place soon afterward when that driver then uploads the content to popular photo- and video-sharing sites, and commonly includes captions and an array of hash-tags -- all while driving. Our solution addresses these new and escalating mobile distractions by blocking the functions and applications that put drivers and innocent public on the road at risk.”
Berman added that the company is in discussions with many different markets, such as insurance, automotive, mobile retailers and more about distribution agreements for the company’s technologies.
From an investment perspective, the company needs to handle some basic blocking and tackling to align itself with shares now trading at the $0.0001 level and more than 700 million shares in the outstanding. Berman was just brought in as interim CEO at the end of May to try and turn the company around. His resume includes more than three decades as an entrepreneur as well as holding many top-level management positions, such as Senior Vice President at YES Network and Senior Vice President of Time Warner Cable, NY. Due diligence is certainly encouraged on this super-sub-penny stock as it will be interesting to see what effect the new chief can have with the company.
