Third SAB Miller Brewery Acquires SurePure Technology

We’ve written on beer many times over the years as it always presents an investment opportunity, despite some signs of sluggish growth projections for U.S. sales. In 2013, 2.79 billion cases of beer were sold, essentially flat with 2.78 billion in 2012, with forecasts of only 4-percent growth to 2.89 billion cases in the next four years. Growing sales of craft brewers, baby boomers slowing down their drinking habits and a changing dynamic for alcohol consumption by young Americans to more liquor and wine are putting some pressure on majors to keep market share and reduce costs to help the bottom line. SurePure, Inc. (OTCQB:SURP) is emerging as a leader in photopurification technology and it’s giving beer makers and others a green solution to savings by employing an alternative to traditional chemicals and pasteurization processes. SurePure has a corporate headquarters in New York City, with a global sales and technical support headquarters in South Africa and distributors spanning Australia, Argentina, Poland and Canada.

The company’s flagship product is the patented SurePure Turbulator, which uses ultra-violet (UV-C) light to predictably purify microbiologically sensitive liquids, such as milk, wine, beer, juices and other ingestible liquids, to prevent spoilage. The turbulent flow of liquid over the lamps in the Turbulator ensures a non-fouling, self-cleaning system with greater microbiological efficacy than conventional, laminar-flow UV systems.

Further applications are also in the purification of contaminated marine diesel fuel, using SurePure's technology as an alternative to biocide addition or excessive micro-filtration. The company heralds the process can even be used to purify animal blood plasma.

SurePure recently published preliminary data evaluating the benefits of the Turbulator after being used at Oaksprings Dairy in Kwa-Zulu, South Africa. Oaksprings’ spokesman Leigh Reyneke reported that the company has experienced energy cost savings to the tune of 75 percent by eliminating the thermal processing that it had been using. The company also said that it received a 10-percent yield increase as a result of reducing psychotrophic bacteria in its milk, while claiming improvements in flavor and quality of its cheese, calling installation of the Turbulator an “unqualified success.”

Beer behemoth SAB Miller, who makes Miller, Blue Moon, Fosters, Hamm’s, Leinenkugel’s and many more brands, has started using SurePure’s technology to reduce energy consumption and improve yields as well. Two SB Miller facilities, in Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa, are already using the Turbulator technology.

On Wednesday, SurePure said that a third SAB Miller brewery has acquired the photopurification process, this time a plant in Gabarone, Botswana.

Right now, the applications are notably confined to Africa, but that’s because SurePure is still waiting on approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission for the technology to be acknowledged as an alternative to current technologies. The company is hoping that the growing body of evidence that is being collected will help sway regulators towards approval, according to a recent article on DairyReporter.com.

The use by a major like SAB Miller has not seemed to have caught the attention of Wall Street players, with the shares holding a steady slide from atop $1 per share to around 20 cents over the past year. Perhaps domestic and EU approvals will serve as the catalyst to grow value from its current $9.7 million market capitalization. Shares are holding at 22 cents in Tuesday trading, without a single share of volume.
