According to a report from Euromonitor International, the worldwide health and wellness market is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2017. The report further notes that the health and wellness industry has outperformed the soft and hot drinks industry. This does not come as a surprise, given that more and more people are becoming health conscious. Indeed, many diseases like diabetes are lifestyle related and given the increasing healthcare costs, it is not surprising that people are now opting for healthier food options as a preventative measure. The health and wellness industry was one of the few industries that came out relatively unaffected by the global economic downturn that followed the financial crisis of 2008/2009. According to the Euromonitor International report, the top three health and wellness markets in 2011-2012 were China, Brazil and the U.S.

One of the reasons for the growth in the health and wellness market is innovation. The Euromonitor International report notes that innovation and product reformulation are the heart of health and wellness.

While big names such as PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP) and Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) have increased their focus on the health and wellness segment, there are also a number of smaller companies with niche offerings. One such company is Fresh Healthy Vending International Inc. (OTCBB:VEND).

Based in San Diego, California, VEND is North America’s leading healthy vending franchisor. The company was the first to come up with the concept of vending machines stocked with fresh and healthy snack options. It currently has over 200 active franchisees throughout the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.

Earlier today, VEND said that it recently presented its newly designed Fresh micro market on a popular news program “Good Morning San Diego.” The news program is the county’s most-watched, all-local news show. The company’s Fresh micro market was featured in a program on February 18.

The program included an interview with Nicholas Yates, who is the company’s Chairman and Vice President of Operations. In the interview, Yates highlighted VEND’s latest product, as well as, recent deployment and installations in over 30 corporate and retail locations throughout the San Diego county.

The program has given VEND a great deal of exposure and should help the company in achieving its goals. The company has already taken a number of steps to make its offering more attractive. One such measure has been the partnership with eMobilePOS. Through the partnership, the company has been able to launch integrated solutions that enable Fresh micro market operators to process mobile payments. Measures like these, coupled with ongoing growth in the health and wellness market, should drive growth for VEND going forward.
