3D visualization technology has seen widespread adaption by the industry. According to a research report from MarketsandMarkets, 3D visualization technology market is expected to grow at a significant pace in the coming years. The research report noted that the market for 3D visualization technology could be worth nearly $10 billion by 2018, growing at a 26.7% clip. At the time of the report in 2013, the market was worth some $3.01 billion. While a number of industries have benefited from 3D visualization technology, MarketsandMarkets noted that the media and entertainment, engineering and architecture, and security and defense are three sectors that can particularly benefit from the technology.

Security and defense is an area 3DIcon Corporation (OTCPK:TDCP) is particularly focusing on. Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 3DIcon is a developer of 3D display technologies. The company is developing CSpace®, a patented volumetric 3D display technology that can produce 360-degree viewable, high-resolution, and color images.

This morning, TDCP announced that it has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Air Force as market opportunity continues to grow for technologies to combat cyber terrorism. The company also commented on what it believes is a major market opportunity for 3D visualization technologies for use by government agencies and military organizations.

TDCP cited a recent article from the National Defense that highlighted the government’s commitment to seeking alternatives for combating cyber terrorism. The article notes, “One of the Pentagon's most glaring technology gaps is in big data analysis to process overwhelming amounts of video and other intelligence.”

TDCP sees a big opportunity here. The company believes that its technology can help cyber operators in interpreting massive amounts of raw data. This data can then be used to combat cyber terrorism, according to TDCP.

3DIcon has already submitted a proposal to the Air Force Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program for the development of 3D visualization/interface for use by Air Force cyber analysts. Doug Freitag, Vice President of Technology and Business Development at 3DIcon, said that the company is pleased with the federal government’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies used to challenge cyber terrorists who wish to harm the U.S. by accessing and manipulating information.

3D visualization technology has taken off in a big way and the market is set for substantial growth. One of the key drivers of this growth has been the security and defense sector. With 3DIcon focusing on this area with its technology, the company could see some solid long-term growth.
