According to Euromonitor International, the U.S. beauty and personal care market registered moderate growth in 2014. The report from Euromonitor noted that spending on cosmetic products received a boost from an improved economic environment in the U.S. Euromonitor though added that the beauty and personal care market is extremely competitive. Indeed, growing competition in the cosmetics industry has led to companies focusing on biological and chemical sciences to create better products. Cosmetic companies are also focusing on products with multiple benefits, according to Euromonitor.

Andrea Rinaldi noted in a report by the European Molecular Biology Organization noted that the latest cosmetics are based on advanced research that includes the use of biotechnology-derived ingredients, stem-cell based products and therapies, and cell or tissue engineering.

This morning one company that is focusing on biotechnology to develop cosmetic products reported positive results from a consumer research study. NuGene International Inc. (OTCBB:NUGN) is a development-stage company based in New York City. The company is engaged in the development, manufacturing and marketing of advanced skin cancer and hair care lines using adipose derived human stem cells and stem cell media.

NuGene announced the findings of a second study, which is assessing the efficacy of its Universal Serum and Eye Serum compared to untreated skin. The study is being conducted by Princeton Consumer Research. It is being conducted as a single-blinded, bilateral facial site study on 28 healthy male and female subjects over 35 years old with aged skin.

The trial is stretched over an eight-week period but only after four weeks of treatment, the active site showed a statistically significant improvement from baseline in all objective and subjective assessments. According to the study, the Universal Serum and Eye Serum applied side had a 40.65% reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and 20.39% improvement in the moisture level after eight weeks of treatment.

Commenting on the positive results, Dr. M. Saeed Kharazmi, Chairman of NuGene, said that this is another objective third party study on the company’s products that supports its marketing claims. Dr. Kharazmi said that as with NUGN’s Universal Cream, the actively treated sides showed significant improvements over untreated sites and using these products simultaneously should provide an even greater impact.

The study used four different measurements. NUGN noted that no adverse reactions were reported during the study. The promising results augur well for NUGN, given that regenerative cosmetic products are expected to see robust growth.
