In our world today, computers have become second nature and increasingly integral to our lives, whether for work or leisure. Point in case; you’re not reading this unless on some type of a computer. There are still plenty of areas, though, where the power of computers is only now being realized. Computer assisted diagnostic devices are used in a variety of fields, including medicine for such things as mammography and radiology, but an industry that is just recently starting to utilize the power of the technology is mining. Dubbed “the new tool in mineral exploration,” Computer Aided Resource Detection Systems, or CARDS, is a technology developed by DIAGNOS Inc. (TSX-Venture:ADK) that helps explorers identify areas for exploration based upon statistical probability of similar known areas of mineralization. On the medical front, DIAGNOS also offers Computer Assisted Retinal Analysis, or CARA, for the management of diabetes patients. A pioneer in Artificial Intelligence, DIAGNOS has built a complex and comprehensive system that says in essence, “Drill here because data indicates this is where the mineralization is.” Obviously, that is oversimplifying the state-of-the-art computer system, but it makes the point of a tool that could save explorers millions in time and resources.

More succinctly, CARDS uses “pattern recognition algorithms to analyze very large digital data sets of compiled georeferenced historical exploration data, including geological, geochemical, geophysical, and structural data, as well as digital elevation (DEM) and satellite imagery data,” according to the company’s website.

CARDS has taken rule-based computer models of the past to the next level with its ability to learn and make better predictions. Geologists can then evaluate the data and use it as an adjunct to traditional methods to maximize performance and probability of success.

Several public companies in Canada have employed the CARDS technology to identify target veins, including Metanor Resources Inc. (TSX-Venture:MTO) and Creso Exploration Inc. (TSX-Venture:CXT).

Adding their name to that list in a milestone moment is Vancouver’s Great Atlantic Resource Corp. (TSX-Venture:GR), a junior that will use CARDS to define potential tungsten targets at its South Quarry property in Newfoundland. The project will mark the first time that CARDS has ever been used to find tungsten.

“Since we consider that Tungsten has a good geophysical response, we are pretty confident to provide significant targets reducing their exploration area by more than 95%", declared Mr Michel Fontaine, Vice-President of Business Development at DIAGNOS.

Exploration on the property has exposed veins by stripping, uncovering a 200-meter-long cross section veins up to 1.5 meter wide and grading 0.3 to 0.4 percent tungsten trioxide, or WO3.

Looking ahead, mining investors will be taking note of the results and potentially using CARDS for a variety of other minerals as mining continues to meet the computer age.
