Should You Invest in the Invesco Water Resources ETF (PHO)?

Looking for broad exposure to the Industrials - Water segment of the equity market? You should consider the Invesco Water Resources ETF (PHO), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on December 6, 2005.

While an excellent vehicle for long term investors, passively managed ETFs are a popular choice among institutional and retail investors due to their low costs, transparency, flexibility, and tax efficiency.

Investor-friendly, sector ETFs provide many options to gain low risk and diversified exposure to a broad group of companies in particular sectors. Industrials - Water is one of the 16 broad Zacks sectors within the Zacks Industry classification. It is currently ranked 4, placing it in top 25%.

Index Details

The fund is sponsored by Invesco. It has amassed assets over $2.08 billion, making it one of the larger ETFs attempting to match the performance of the Industrials - Water segment of the equity market. PHO seeks to match the performance of the NASDAQ OMX US Water Index before fees and expenses.

The NASDAQ OMX US Water Index tracks the performance of US exchange-listed companies that create products designed to conserve and purify water for homes, businesses and industries.

It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 0.55%.

Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure which minimizes single stock risk, it is still important to look into a fund's holdings before investing. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

This ETF has heaviest allocation in the Industrials sector -- about 49.2% of the portfolio. Information Technology and Healthcare round out the top three.

Looking at individual holdings, Roper Technologies Inc (ROP) accounts for about 8.43% of total assets, followed by Ecolab Inc (ECL) and Waters Corp (WAT).

The top 10 holdings account for about 53.41% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

The ETF return is roughly 3.83% and it's up approximately 3.7% so far this year and in the past one year (as of 08/05/2026), respectively. PHO has traded between $64.15 and $74.61 during this last 52-week period.

The ETF has a beta of 0.96 and standard deviation of 16.41% for the trailing three-year period, making it a medium risk choice in the space. With about 44 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers.
