Inogen, Inc. INGN trades at a steep sales-multiple discount even as second-quarter 2026 margins improved and international demand remained firm. The disconnect creates an interesting setup, but the operating recovery is not yet broad-based.
Investors must weigh better cost control, expanding respiratory offerings and a debt-free balance sheet against persistent pressure in U.S. direct sales and rentals. That mix supports patience rather than a simple value-driven call.
Inogen’s Valuation Offers a Wide Discount
INGN trades at 0.4X forward 12-month sales, far below 4.2X for its Zacks sub-industry and 2.2X for the broader Zacks sector. The gap shows how little investors are currently paying for each dollar of expected sales.
The stock also sits below its five-year median multiple of 0.6X, after ranging from 0.3X to 3.8X over that span. The discount can provide rerating potential, but it also reflects skepticism about the durability of Inogen’s turnaround.
INGN’s Margin Progress Strengthens the Case
Second-quarter adjusted gross margin improved 65 basis points year over year to 45.6%, helped by cost improvements and lower warranty expenses. Adjusted operating loss narrowed to $1.3 million from $2.6 million, showing better expense discipline.

Research and development spending still rose as Inogen funded clinical evidence generation and new-product development. That balance matters because the company needs operating leverage without starving the respiratory portfolio initiatives intended to support future growth.
Inogen’s Growth Mix Is Shifting
International sales increased 14.8% to $41.3 million in the second quarter, marking a 10th consecutive quarter of double-digit international growth. Inogen is expanding U.S. business-to-business relationships as home medical equipment providers increasingly start oxygen patients on portable concentrators.
The broader respiratory market includes ResMed Inc. RMD, whose Sleep and Breathing Health business sells CPAP systems, masks and related solutions. Koninklijke Philips N.V. PHG also operates a Sleep & Respiratory Care business, underscoring the established competition around adjacent respiratory categories.

INGN Still Faces Material Execution Risks
U.S. sales fell 2.3% to $42.3 million, while U.S. rental revenues declined 11.8% to $11.6 million. The faster shift toward first-start portable oxygen concentrators at home medical equipment providers is narrowing Inogen’s traditional direct-to-consumer and rental funnel.
Reimbursement dependence, distributor inventory timing, foreign exchange exposure, supply-chain uncertainty and pricing competition add further risk. Inogen must prove that gains in business-to-business sales, international markets and new products can offset structural weakness in its legacy channels.
Inogen’s Balance Sheet Preserves Flexibility
Inogen ended the second quarter with $87.3 million in cash and cash equivalents and no outstanding debt. That financial position gives the company flexibility to support commercial expansion, product development and clinical programs while it works through the U.S. channel transition.
The company generated $2.9 million of operating cash flow in the quarter. Still, liquidity alone does not resolve execution risk, making disciplined capital allocation important as Inogen funds multiple growth initiatives while pursuing profitability.
INGN’s Signals Support a Patient Stance
The low valuation, better margins and international momentum keep the investment case alive, but the U.S. channel reset remains the central test. Investors may want clearer evidence that business-to-business growth and newer respiratory products can produce steadier companywide growth.
INGN currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), with a VGM Score of C, Value Score of C, Growth Score of D and Momentum Score of A. The Rank supports a hold posture, while the mixed Style Scores favor monitoring execution rather than treating the valuation discount as a stand-alone buy signal.
