Tempus AI, Inc. TEM is showing faster oncology testing growth, rising data demand and improving adjusted profitability. Management also raised its 2026 revenue outlook after second-quarter results topped expectations.
The counterweight is valuation. TEM still trades at a premium to the broader medical sector, while reimbursement gains, cash generation and several growth initiatives require further execution.
TEM's Revenue Growth Supports the Bull Case
Tempus raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $1.595-$1.605 billion, representing roughly 25% annual growth. Second-quarter revenues increased 21.6% year over year to $382.5 million.
Diagnostics revenues rose 20% to $289.3 million as oncology volume climbed 31%. Data and Applications revenues advanced 28% to $93.2 million, giving Tempus two meaningful growth engines rather than dependence on a single business line.

Tempus AI's Valuation Leaves Less Room for Error
TEM trades at 5.5X forward 12-month sales, compared with 5.6X for the Zacks sub-industry, 2.2X for the medical sector and 5.1X for the S&P 500. That valuation is below the stock's five-year median of 7.6X.

The discount to its sub-industry is modest, while the premium to the sector remains sizable. Investors are therefore paying for continued revenue expansion, reimbursement progress and improving profitability, leaving less room for execution setbacks.
TEM's Reimbursement Upside Could Lift Future Growth
FDA approval for tumor-only xT CDx enables Tempus to move its solid-tumor DNA portfolio toward unified Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory Test pricing. Management expects an estimated $200 average selling price uplift, or about $85 million of annual revenues beginning in 2027.
Liquid biopsy remains another potential catalyst. Management expects xF approval in the latter half of 2027 and assumes a $7,500 ADLT price. Guardant Health, Inc. GH, which received FDA approval for Guardant360 Liquid CDx in May, illustrates the competitive activity surrounding liquid-biopsy diagnostics.
Tempus AI Still Faces Cash Flow and Execution Risks
Second-quarter GAAP net income was $5.6 million, but it included $98.5 million of unrealized gains on marketable securities and $55.6 million of stock compensation expense and related payroll taxes. Operating cash flow remained negative at $80.8 million for the first six months of 2026.
Tempus is also expanding molecular residual disease testing while pursuing the Personalis acquisition. Natera, Inc. NTRA remains active in the same MRD field through its Signatera platform, underscoring the competitive backdrop as Tempus broadens commercialization and reimbursement.
TEM's Data Momentum Adds a Recurring Growth Angle
Data and Applications revenues grew 28% in the second quarter, while Insights advanced 36%. Tempus signed about $200 million of new Data and Applications licenses, including multi-year relationships spanning data licensing and modeling.
Management is targeting long-term data growth near 30%. Still, contracts can be recognized over extended periods as obligations are satisfied, so bookings growth may not translate proportionately into reported revenues each quarter.
TEM's Hold Signal Fits a Balanced Risk-Reward Setup
Tempus has meaningful growth drivers, but the current valuation and execution requirements argue against treating better operating momentum as an automatic buy signal. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
TEM also has a VGM Score of F, Value Score of F, Growth Score of F and Momentum Score of D. Zacks Style Scores are designed to complement the Zacks Rank, and weaker grades provide an additional reason for investors to remain selective despite improving business trends.
