SMCI Gains From Global AI Infrastructure Demand

Super Micro Computer’s exposure to AI infrastructure remains a central growth driver. In fiscal 2026, Super Micro Computer’s revenues rose 78% to $39.1 billion, and the company received more than $60 billion of new orders during the fourth quarter, leaving a record backlog entering fiscal 2027.

AI solutions represented about 60% of fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenues. Management expects AI-related solutions to exceed 80% of revenues going forward based on backlog. Furthermore, the company continued to co-design next-generation systems across NVIDIA NVDA, Advanced Micro Devices AMD, Intel and Arm platforms.

Super Micro Computer continues to emphasize early availability of new AI systems as a competitive advantage. In fourth-quarter fiscal 2026, the company was shipping volume products across NVIDIA’s GB300 NVL72, HGX B300, B200 NVL4 and RTX 6000 Pro lines. SMCI is also preparing systems based on the NVIDIA Vera Rubin and Vera CPU platforms.

With AMD, Super Micro Computer launched the Helios product line and MI450 Total Solution while continuing to support MI350 and MI355X systems. Intel Xeon 6+ platforms are shipping in volume, and the company is developing systems for Arm-based AGI processors. SMCI’s Building Block architecture remains central to its product-development model.

Rising rack density is increasing the importance of advanced cooling in AI data centers, and SMCI continues to expand direct liquid-cooling capabilities. The company is producing liquid-cooled rack-scale systems for current AI platforms and said most of its DLC production lines support dense 250kW-class racks. Its fiscal 2027 capacity plan calls for more than 6,000 racks per month, including more than 3,000 direct liquid-cooled racks. However, SMCI also faces some headwinds.

SMCI Grapples With Inventory and Competitive Challenges

Super Micro Computer continues to carry a large inventory position while AI hardware platforms transition quickly. The company recorded $188.1 million of inventory valuation adjustment write-downs during fiscal 2026. Super Micro Computer generated $747 million of operating cash flow in fourth-quarter fiscal 2026, reversing the $6.6 billion outflow in the prior quarter, but full-year operating cash flow remained negative at about $6.8 billion in fiscal 2026.

Adding to these challenges, SMCI has been facing intense competition from Hewlett Packard Enterprise HPE and Dell Technologies in the AI data center space. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is focusing on AI deployment at scale while enabling organizations to scale generative AI, agentic AI and high-performance computing workloads.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s products, like its compute, storage, networking and GreenLake platform, integrate NVIDIA's GPUs, CPUs, networking technologies and AI Enterprise software. Super Micro Computer remains exposed to U.S. export-control requirements for advanced computing products. The company has disclosed that its board is conducting an independent review of certain transactions in connection with export-control issues.

Together, these factors are likely to keep SMCI’s execution risk high. The capex-heavy business model, inventory turnover and competition from larger players are likely to keep margins squeezed. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for SMCI’s fiscal 2027 earnings has been pegged at $3.48, implying a year-over-year decline of 4.13%. The estimates have been revised upward in the past seven days.

Conclusion: Hold SMCI Stock Now

Super Micro Computer’s strong share-price momentum reflects robust AI infrastructure demand, a record backlog and expanding liquid-cooling capabilities. However, elevated inventory, negative full-year operating cash flow, intense competition and export-control concerns create meaningful execution risks. With AI-related solutions expected to account for more than 80% of revenues, growth prospects remain compelling, but margin pressure and a projected fiscal 2027 earnings decline warrant caution. Given these competing factors, investors should retain this Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock now. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
