5E Advances Magnet-Grade Ferroboron Development Program

5E Advanced Materials, Inc. FEAM has announced progress in its magnet-grade ferroboron (FeB) development program, marking a key step in its strategy to expand beyond refined borates into higher-value boron derivative materials used in permanent magnets, specialty steels, industrial automation and defense applications.

Independent testing confirmed the successful formation of iron boride (Fe2B), validating the company's ferroboron production process and supporting its long-term mine-to-magnet strategy.

The company reported that independent X-ray diffraction (XRD) testing confirmed the formation of the targeted iron boride phase in ferroboron samples processed at 1,300°C. In addition, density-based analysis showed a significant improvement in conversion efficiency for the leading precursor combination of iron oxide (Fe2O3) and boron oxide (B2O3), rising from approximately 11% at 1,200°C to an average range of 51-62% at 1,300°C. The company identified this precursor pairing as the most effective combination tested so far.

Building on these results, 5E has initiated testing at 1,400°C to evaluate further improvements in conversion efficiency. The company is also preparing an approximately 500-gram batch with a third-party metallurgical processing partner to support process optimization, material characterization and the eventual production of customer samples. These efforts are aimed at advancing the technology toward commercial-scale applications.

The ferroboron initiative leverages 5E's Fort Cady boron resource in Southern California, which the company believes can serve as the foundation for a domestic supply chain supporting neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets and other strategic applications. The announcement follows recent federal support for the Fort Cady project, including White House recognition and an $8 million investment from the Export-Import Bank of the United States as part of broader U.S. critical minerals initiatives.

Per FEAM, the independent test results validate the formation of iron boride and represent an encouraging step in advancing its ferroboron strategy. The company is now focused on improving conversion efficiency, scaling batch sizes and conducting further material characterization to support customer sample development and strengthen the potential role of its Fort Cady boron resource in the U.S. permanent magnet supply chain.
