How much a stock's price changes over time is important for most investors, since price performance can both impact your investment portfolio and help you compare investment results across sectors and industries.
Another factor that can influence investors is FOMO, or the fear of missing out, especially with tech giants and popular consumer-facing stocks.
What if you'd invested in Caterpillar (CAT) ten years ago? It may not have been easy to hold on to CAT for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?
Caterpillar's Business In-Depth
With that in mind, let's take a look at Caterpillar's main business drivers.
Caterpillar, known for its iconic yellow machines, is the largest global construction and mining equipment manufacturer. Given that it serves diverse sectors, including infrastructure, construction, mining and oil and gas, the company is considered a bellwether of the global economy.
It has more than 4 million products with an extensive dealer network of 150 dealers. Of these, 41 are located in the United States and 109 are located outside the United States, serving 190 countries.
Caterpillar is the 30th largest company on the S&P 500 Index, with a market capitalization of around $405 billion. It holds the second position in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with a 9.60% weight. It is also a member of the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrat Index.
The Irving, TX-based company has five operating segments, four of which are reportable segments.
Caterpillar and its subsidiaries, excluding Financial Products, fall under Machinery, Power & Energy (MP&E), which accounted for around 95% of its total revenues in 2025. Construction Industries, Resource Industries and the Power & Energy segments fall under MP&E.
The Construction Industries segment manufactures machinery utilized in infrastructure and building construction.
The Resource Industries segment caters to customers using machinery in mining, quarry and aggregates, heavy construction as well as those using locomotives and rail-related products and services.
The Power & Energy segment supports customers using reciprocating engines, turbines and related services across industries serving Power Generation, Oil and Gas and Industrial applications, including marine applications and product support of on-highway engines.
All Other Segments comprise activities such as product management and development, parts distribution, integrated logistics solutions, research and development for automation and other activities.
Financial Products Segment (5% of total revenues in 2025) provides financing alternatives for Caterpillar products and services, as well as financing for power generation facilities that incorporate Caterpillar products.
Bottom Line
Putting together a successful investment portfolio takes a combination of research, patience, and a little bit of risk. For Caterpillar, if you bought shares a decade ago, you're likely feeling really good about your investment today.
A $1000 investment made in August 2016 would be worth $9,943.50, or a gain of 894.35%, as of August 27, 2026, according to our calculations. This return excludes dividends but includes price appreciation.
Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 253.88% and gold's return of 234.25% over the same time frame.
Analysts are anticipating more upside for CAT.
Caterpillar's outlook is supported by broad demand across construction, mining and power markets, with rising sales to users and a record backlog improving revenue visibility. Order momentum remains strong across all primary segments. Power & Energy is benefiting from data-center power needs and healthy oil and gas activity, while capacity additions expand the company's ability to serve multi-year demand. The Construction Industries segment remains supported by infrastructure, rental fleet investment and large projects. Mining demand is aided by elevated fleet age, commodity investment and technology adoption. Higher services revenues and cash generation add resilience and support shareholder returns. While tariffs remain a headwind, improved volume, pricing and management's higher full-year outlook support an Outperform view.
Shares have gained 5.01% over the past four weeks and there have been 13 higher earnings estimate revisions for fiscal 2026 compared to none lower. The consensus estimate has moved up as well.
