Making its debut on 06/16/2006, smart beta exchange traded fund WisdomTree U.S. LargeCap Dividend ETF (DLN) provides investors broad exposure to the Style Box - Large Cap Value category of the market.
What Are Smart Beta ETFs?
Products that are based on market cap weighted indexes, which are strategies designed to reflect a specific market segment or the market as a whole, have traditionally dominated the ETF industry.
Because market cap weighted indexes provide a low-cost, convenient, and transparent way of replicating market returns, they work well for investors who believe in market efficiency.
On the other hand, some investors who believe that it is possible to beat the market by superior stock selection opt to invest in another class of funds that track non-cap weighted strategies--popularly known as smart beta.
Based on specific fundamental characteristics, or a combination of such, these indexes attempt to pick stocks that have a better chance of risk-return performance.
Even though this space provides many choices to investors--think one of the simplest methodologies like equal-weighting and more complicated ones like fundamental and volatility/momentum based weighting--not all have been able to deliver first-rate results.
Fund Sponsor & Index
The fund is managed by Wisdomtree. DLN has been able to amass assets over $6.35 billion, making it one of the larger ETFs in the Style Box - Large Cap Value. DLN, before fees and expenses, seeks to match the performance of the WisdomTree U.S. LargeCap Dividend Index.
The WisdomTree U.S. LargeCap Dividend Index is a fundamentally weighted index that measures the performance of the large-capitalization segment of the U.S. dividend-paying market.
Cost & Other Expenses
For ETF investors, expense ratios are an important factor when considering a fund's return; in the long-term, cheaper funds actually have the ability to outperform their more expensive cousins if all other things remain the same.
Operating expenses on an annual basis are 0.28% for DLN, making it on par with most peer products in the space.
It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.73%.
Sector Exposure and Top Holdings
It is important to delve into an ETF's holdings before investing despite the many upsides to these kinds of funds like diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.
For DLN, it has heaviest allocation in the Information Technology sector --about 20.6% of the portfolio --while Financials and Healthcare round out the top three.
Looking at individual holdings, Microsoft Corp (MSFT) accounts for about 4.53% of total assets, followed by Nvidia Corp (NVDA) and Jpmorgan Chase & Co (JPM).
Its top 10 holdings account for approximately 24.95% of DLN's total assets under management.
Performance and Risk
So far this year, DLN return is roughly 15.55%, and is up about 19.89% in the last one year (as of 08/28/2026). During this past 52-week period, the fund has traded between $84.89 and $101.59.
DLN has a beta of 0.75 and standard deviation of 11.28% for the trailing three-year period, which makes the fund a medium risk choice in the space. With about 310 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk .
