Shares of Cresco Labs CRLBF have staged a strong rally over the past month, reflecting improving operating performance and growing investor interest in the company’s growth prospects.
Last month, the company reported second-quarter 2026 results, which beat our consensus estimates for both earnings and sales. The results highlighted encouraging revenue growth and improving margins, while cash flow from operations also improved.
However, investors typically focus beyond a single quarter’s numbers and assess broader fundamentals. Let’s take a closer look at the company’s fundamentals to determine whether the stock deserves a place in investors’ portfolios.
CRLBF Strengthens Growth But Expects More Normalized Margins
Cresco Labs delivered a stronger second quarter, with revenues increasing 15% sequentially to $173 million. The company also reported 4% sequential organic revenue growth, indicating that the improvement was not led solely by acquisitions. Retail revenues rose 18% sequentially to $121 million, while wholesale revenues increased 7% to $52 million.
The Pennsylvania market was an important contributor to this improvement. Cresco operated nine acquired dispensaries under a management services agreement during the quarter, and gross profit (in absolute terms) at these stores increased 11% versus the pre-acquisition baseline even before the locations were rebranded or fully integrated into Cresco’s operating model. The company expects further benefits as the stores transition to the Sunnyside banner and its operating playbook is implemented.
Profitability also improved sequentially. Adjusted gross margin increased by 90 basis points (bps) to 51.6%, while adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 110 bps to 22.8%. Better yields and product quality in Massachusetts and Ohio helped wholesale unit economics. However, management indicated that some favorable cost benefits in the second quarter are not expected to recur to the same extent.
For the third quarter, Cresco expects revenues to be roughly in line with the second quarter, with growth from the Pennsylvania store ramp and Kentucky expected to offset pricing compression and competition. Management expects gross margin in the high-40% to 50% range and adjusted EBITDA margin of around 20%, suggesting that while the company’s underlying operating performance is improving, the unusually strong margin levels seen in Q2 may moderate.
Over the longer term, management sees additional growth opportunities from its positions in emerging limited-license markets such as Kentucky and Texas. At the same time, its cost structure is expected to support operating leverage as revenues expand. Nevertheless, sustained pricing pressure and a highly competitive cannabis landscape could continue to weigh on its performance.
Cutthroat Competition
Cresco Labs operates in an increasingly competitive U.S. cannabis market, where established multi-state operators (MSOs) are pursuing similar expansion strategies. Verano Holdings VRNO, another U.S.-based MSO, is also expanding its retail footprint across key markets while investing in production capacity and positioning itself for future growth.
Curaleaf Holdings CURLF, another leading U.S.-based MSO, is similarly pursuing expansion opportunities. It recently launched an unsolicited takeover bid for Aurora Cannabis ACB to strengthen its international medical cannabis platform, although the deal remains uncertain as the latter’s board reviews the proposal.
Cresco, Verano and Curaleaf also share a potential capital-markets catalyst, as the three companies are positioning themselves to benefit from greater access to U.S. exchanges as federal cannabis regulations evolve.

How to Play CRLBF Stock?
Cresco’s improving revenue performance, organic growth and expansion initiatives indicate that its underlying business trends are strengthening. The company is also benefiting from a more favorable regulatory environment, as Section 280E restrictions no longer apply to qualifying medical cannabis operations following the April 2026 rescheduling, which is expected to support net income and cash generation. Cresco also sees potential in international markets, where management remains encouraged by its initial experience and believes its brands are transportable across markets.
However, persistent pricing pressure, intense competition and expectations for more normalized margins could limit near-term upside. The recent improvement in the 2026 loss-per-share estimate, while the 2027 estimate remains unchanged, suggests that analysts expect some near-term improvement but remain cautious about Cresco’s longer-term earnings prospects.
Given these mixed signals and the stock’s continued underperformance, investors may want to adopt a wait-and-watch approach toward the Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company.
