Is DKS Cheap Enough to Offset Foot Locker and Margin Execution Risks?

DICK'S Sporting Goods, Inc. DKS trades at about 10.41X forward 12-month earnings after shares fell 39.5% in the past three months. That multiple sits well below the stock's five-year median of 12.7X and the Zacks sub-industry's 15.33X, putting valuation squarely in focus.

The discount comes with heavier execution risk. Second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings and revenues missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate, while a more promotional athletic footwear and apparel market led DICK'S to cut its adjusted earnings outlook to $11-$12 per share from $13.50-$14.50.

The core DICK'S Business remains the clearest offset. Comparable sales increased 4.9% in the second quarter, supported by higher average ticket, transaction growth and broad-based gains across footwear, apparel and hardlines. The business also outpaced the broader industry by roughly 200 basis points, indicating that the company's market position has held up despite tougher pricing conditions.

Foot Locker is the bigger problem. The acquired business generated $1.74 billion in second-quarter revenues, but pro forma comparable sales declined 3.6% as legacy footwear silhouettes, fewer launches and softer launch performance weighed on demand. DICK'S now expects the Foot Locker Business to post an operating loss of $40-$80 million in fiscal 2026, compared with its prior expectation for $110-$150 million in operating profit.

Margin pressure extends beyond Foot Locker. Adjusted gross profit was $1.9 billion, or 34.1% of sales, down 300 basis points year over year because of the mix impact from Foot Locker, athletic footwear and apparel promotions and higher fuel and supply-chain costs. Adjusted selling, general and administrative expenses rose 65% to $1.4 billion, including $477 million from Foot Locker and higher spending on marketing, digital capabilities, stores and teammate health care.

The broader athletic market offers little assurance that promotions will fade quickly. adidas AG ADDYY said it kept European wholesale sell-in conservative in the second quarter amid heightened promotional activity, even as its global business grew. Under Armour, Inc. UAA reported a 2% wholesale revenue decline and an 8% footwear revenue drop in its latest quarter, while citing pricing headwinds as one pressure on gross margin.

DICK'S still has levers to improve the setup. Management remains confident in $100-$125 million of medium-term Foot Locker cost synergies and has expanded its Fast Break store initiative beyond roughly 250 locations. The DICK'S Business is also continuing to invest in House of Sport, Field House and GameChanger, while fiscal 2026 comparable sales guidance for the core business remains positive at 2.5-4%.

The valuation discount therefore looks justified rather than obviously excessive. DKS trades below its historical median and peer benchmarks, but earnings estimates have reset sharply lower and the company must stabilize Foot Locker while protecting merchandise margin in a promotional market.

DKS currently carries a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell).

You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

It has a Value Score of B, Growth Score of C, Momentum Score of D and VGM Score of B. The favorable value-oriented scores reflect an inexpensive profile, but the Zacks Rank carries greater weight in the Zacks framework because it reflects unfavorable earnings estimate revisions. The weaker Momentum Score also argues against treating a low multiple alone as enough to offset near-term execution risk.

From thousands of stocks, 5 Zacks experts each have chosen their favorite to skyrocket +100% or more in months to come. From those 5, Director of Research Sheraz Mian hand-picks one to have the most explosive upside of all.

This company targets millennial and Gen Z audiences, generating nearly $1 billion in revenue last quarter alone. A recent pullback makes now an ideal time to jump aboard. Of course, all our elite picks aren’t winners but this one could far surpass earlier Zacks’ Stocks Set to Double like Nano-X Imaging which shot up +129.6% in little more than 9 months.
