Ciena Q3 Earnings Call Flags Supply as Key Constraint on 2027 Growth

Ciena Corporation CIEN framed its fiscal third-quarter 2026 earnings call around accelerating optical demand and deep visibility, while stressing that component supply is the main constraint on revenue conversion. Management expects backlog above $10 billion by fiscal year-end.

Adjusted earnings of $2.11 per share topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.74. Revenues of $1.67 billion beat the consensus mark of $1.65 billion. Ciena also raised fiscal 2026 revenue guidance.

CIEN Backlog Points to Extended Demand

President and CEO Gary Smith said fiscal third-quarter book-to-bill was significantly above 1. One month into the fiscal fourth quarter, bookings were already approaching the entire fiscal third-quarter total.

CFO Marc Graff said backlog increased $800 million during the fiscal third quarter to $8.5 billion. Management expects faster growth in the fiscal fourth quarter and sees supply and demand remaining out of balance into 2028.

Smith added that about half of Ciena's business now comes directly from hyperscalers. He also highlighted growing neoscaler demand and international network investment.

Ciena Sets a Higher Fiscal 2027 Floor

Graff provided an early fiscal 2027 view calling for at least 30% revenue growth to $8.3-$8.4 billion, with supply-driven upside. He expects an adjusted gross margin of at least 45-46% and an adjusted operating margin of 25-27%.

For fourth-quarter fiscal 2026, Ciena expects revenues of $1.75 billion, plus or minus $50 million, adjusted gross margin of 45%, plus or minus 50 basis points, and adjusted operating margin of 20%, plus or minus 50 basis points.

The company raised fiscal 2026 revenue guidance to $6.42 billion, plus or minus $50 million, representing 35% growth at the midpoint. Graff expects full-year adjusted operating margin between 20% and 21%.

CIEN Secures Supply for the Growth Plan

Graff said Ciena finalized long-term agreements for key components through 2029, including incremental capacity. The agreements are intended to support the multiyear demand already reflected in backlog.

Those commitments will consume cash in the near term. Graff expects lower cash from operations in the fiscal fourth quarter, while capital expenditures should finish at the high end of the $250-$275 million range.

He said prior investments created capacity supporting year-to-date revenue growth above 60% across RLS, pluggables and Waveserver. Ciena ended the fiscal third quarter with $2.8 billion in cash and equivalents.

Ciena Advances Hyper-Rail and Interconnects

Smith said WaveLogic 6 Extreme adoption has surpassed the comparable WaveLogic 5 Extreme ramp. He also cited roughly 70% RLS share in disaggregated optical line systems.

Hyper-Rail remains on track for initial customer standardization by the end of 2026. In Q&A, Graff said its fiscal 2027 ramp will reach several hundred million dollars and carry above-average margins.

Smith also said fiscal third-quarter shipments of 800ZR pluggables more than doubled sequentially. Ciena received Vesta sample orders from several anchor customers, with co-packaged optics revenues expected in 2027 and ramping in 2028.

CIEN Expands Pricing and Demand Terms

A Wolfe Research analyst asked how customer negotiations are changing economics. Graff said price increases range from high single digits to high teens or low 20s, depending on customer and product, with some applying selectively to backlog.

Graff added that talks cover payment terms, fill rates and reciprocal delivery commitments, aligning customer demand obligations with the capacity Ciena must secure.

A JPMorgan analyst pressed on backlog timing. Executive advisor Scott McFeely said the vast majority of expected year-end backlog carries fiscal 2027 customer request dates and covers most of the early fiscal 2027 revenue outlook.

Ciena Keeps Focus on Capacity and Margins

Smith's message centered on a multiyear optical investment cycle across traditional WAN, AI WAN and data centers. Management's near-term priority is securing enough supply to convert demand while maintaining execution.

Graff paired that growth posture with margin discipline, investing in capacity and product development while targeting another step-up in adjusted operating profitability in fiscal 2027.
