Factors Favoring AFG
AFG’s Specialty P&C platform spans roughly 36 niche businesses across property, transportation, casualty and specialty financial lines, helping it adapt underwriting and pricing as conditions change. Management expects diversification and disciplined underwriting to support premium growth even as parts of the P&C market soften.
Average renewal pricing excluding workers’ compensation rose about 5% in the second quarter of 2026, marking four consecutive quarters near that level and 40 consecutive quarters of overall renewal increases. Management said pricing in social inflation-exposed excess liability and umbrella remains around double digits, enabling AFG to meet or exceed targeted returns despite softer conditions in parts of the market.
About two-thirds of AFG’s $17.1 billion investment portfolio was in fixed maturities as of June 30, 2026, giving the insurer a large base of predictable income-producing assets. P&C net investment income continues to be driven by higher alternative investment returns.
Management expects alternative investment returns to improve versus 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 during the second half of 2026 and continues to target long-term annualized alternative returns averaging 10% or better.
AFG ended the second quarter of 2026 with $4.96 billion of shareholders’ equity excluding AOCI and $6.81 billion of total capital, while the principal amount of long-term debt was $1.85 billion.
Management expects operations to continue generating excess capital through the remainder of 2026, preserving flexibility for acquisitions, special dividends, share repurchases and investment in core businesses.
Wealth Distribution
AFG continues to pair regular dividends with special dividends and opportunistic share repurchases. In August 2026, the board raised the regular annual dividend 10.2% to $3.88 per share, marking the 21st consecutive annual increase; the 10-year compound annual growth rate in regular dividends paid is 12.1%. During the quarter, AFG returned nearly $100 million to shareholders through $26 million of repurchases and an 88 cents per share regular dividend. Management expects excess capital generation through the remainder of 2026, leaving room to fund organic growth and acquisitions while continuing shareholder distributions.
