Zacks Investment Research has recently initiated coverage of Lee Enterprises, Incorporated LEE with a Neutral recommendation. The company’s improving profitability, lower financing costs and ongoing cost discipline provide support, but persistent revenue contraction and weaker digital momentum temper the investment outlook.
Lee is a digital-first subscription and marketing services company serving 72 mid-sized communities across 25 states. Its portfolio includes digital subscription platforms, newspapers, websites and mobile applications, while its marketing offerings serve more than 20,000 local advertisers. The company continues to navigate the transition from legacy print operations toward digital subscriptions and advertising solutions.
A key positive is Lee’s improved financing structure, as highlighted by the research report. In February 2026, the company reduced the fixed interest rate on its roughly $455 million term loan to 5% from 9% for five years, implying about $18 million in annual interest savings. Interest expense declined about 45% year over year to $5.6 million in the fiscal third quarter of 2026, providing greater flexibility to direct cash toward debt reduction.
Profitability has also strengthened despite continued top-line pressure. Fiscal third-quarter adjusted EBITDA increased 23% to $18.4 million, while adjusted EBITDA margin expanded roughly 400 basis points to 15%. For the first nine months of fiscal 2026, adjusted EBITDA rose to $45.8 million from $30.3 million, helped by expense reductions that have outpaced the revenue decline.
Further balance-sheet improvement could come from noncore asset sales. Lee has identified assets valued at up to $20 million for monetization. Meanwhile, its five-year management agreement with Hoffmann Media Group offers another capital-light avenue for generating incremental fee income.
However, revenue trends remain a key concern, as outlined in the report. Fiscal third-quarter revenues declined 10.8% year over year to about $126 million, with advertising and marketing services down 10.9% and subscription revenues falling 11.1%. Digital trends have also softened, with total digital revenues decreasing 8.1% and digital-only subscribers declining 12.8% to 584,000. Continued weakness could increase Lee’s reliance on cost reductions to sustain earnings growth.
Structural pressure in print remains another headwind. Fiscal third-quarter print advertising revenues declined 17.1%, print subscription revenues fell 13.5%, and print subscribers dropped 19.3%. In addition, lingering effects from the February 2025 cybersecurity incident have continued to affect digital subscription trends. While insurance reimbursements have helped offset some financial losses, sustained audience erosion and operational disruptions could weigh on the pace of Lee’s transition.
Lee’s shares have experienced mixed performance, reflecting investor uncertainty around the pace of its transition and the sustainability of recent profitability improvements. From a valuation perspective, the stock trades at a discount to broader industry and market benchmarks on an EV/sales basis.
Lee’s lower financing costs, improving profitability, cost discipline and deleveraging opportunities provide meaningful support, while persistent revenue contraction, weaker digital momentum and structural print declines remain key risks, warranting a balanced stance on the stock.
