In this episode of ETF Spotlight, I speak with Dr. David Song, Head of Life Sciences at Tema ETFs, about healthcare innovators, specifically biotechnology firms developing novel cancer therapies and companies capitalizing on the AI transformation across medicine.

Moderna MRNA surged 177% in a single session in August after reporting a significant breakthrough in melanoma treatment. Its mRNA cancer vaccine, jointly developed with Merck (MRK), showed promising results. It was the biggest one-day surge for a large company in decades and demonstrated how important these results could be.

Moderna is best known for its COVID-19 mRNA vaccine. mRNA vaccines essentially teach the immune system to recognize and attack a specific target, such as a virus or cancer cells.

The recent results paved the way for further innovation, as a personalized cancer vaccine suggests that cancer treatment could potentially be programmable. Analyzing a tumor’s DNA to identify mutations and target them through mRNA bodes well for the convergence of AI and genomics.

Could this approach also work in other cancers? Which other companies are developing innovative cancer treatments?

The Tema Oncology ETF CANC invests in biotechnology companies fighting back against cancer. It is poised to benefit as global oncology spending is forecast to grow nearly 50% from 2025 to 2029, exceeding $440 billion.

The Tema Healthcare AI ETF HLTH provides exposure to companies leveraging AI to transform healthcare across drug discovery, diagnostics, clinical applications, patient care and other emerging opportunities.

Healthcare looks attractive as investor exposure to the sector remains near historic lows, even as earnings growth strengthens and drug innovation accelerates. Robust biopharma financing, increased M&A activity and emerging AI applications could provide additional catalysts for the sector.
