Stock Market News for Sep 9, 2026

Wall Street ended lower as market participants weighed inflation concerns, rising oil prices and interest-rate expectations. The Nasdaq Composite, the Dow and the S&P 500 ended in negative territory.

How Did the Benchmarks Perform?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 1.2%, or 628.18 points, to close at 52,786.07. Twenty-five components of the 30-stock index ended in negative territory, and five ended in positive territory. The major loser of the Dow was Amgen Inc. AMGN. The stock price of this pharmaceutical company fell 10.1%. Amgen currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined 0.3% to close at 26,421.41.

The S&P 500 lost 0.6% to end at 7,673.52. Out of the 11 broad sectors of the broad-market index, eight ended in negative territory, while three were in positive territory. The Financials Select Sector SPDR (XLF), the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV) and the Materials Select Sector SPDR (XLB) fell 1.4%, 2.6% and 0.9%, respectively, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 1%.

The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), increased by 1.5% to 14.53. A total of 15.7 billion shares were traded on Tuesday, lower than the last 20-session average of 14.9 billion. The S&P 500 posted five new 52-week highs and 10 new lows, and the Nasdaq Composite recorded 55 new highs and 136 new lows.

Oil Prices Add Inflation Concerns

Oil prices jumped on Tuesday on concerns over U.S.-Iran tensions. Brent crude surged 1.48% to $99.37 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude jumped 1.42% to $94.35 a barrel. The oil price jump added to concerns over inflation and the impact that higher energy prices could have on interest rates.

The rise in crude oil prices ahead of the August inflation reports could push up energy costs across transportation, production and consumer goods, adding to inflationary pressures. The Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) reports for August are due later this week. The data could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s Sept. 15-16 policy meeting. Currently, the CME FedWatch Tool sees a 60.4% chance of a 25-basis-point increase in the upcoming meeting.
