How High-Return Refinery Investment Strengthens MPC's Long-Term Margins

Marathon Petroleum Corporation MPC continues to direct capital toward refinery projects designed to improve product yields, expand flexibility and lower costs. For 2026, the company expects capital spending of $1.5 billion, excluding MPLX, with roughly 65% allocated to value-enhancing investments and 35% to sustaining operations. Its refinery program includes high-return projects at Galveston Bay, Robinson, El Paso and Garyville, alongside shorter-cycle initiatives aimed at margin improvement and cost reduction.

Several investments are already contributing. The Garyville jet flexibility project was completed in the first quarter, while the El Paso yield improvement and Robinson product flexibility projects entered service during the second quarter. El Paso’s project upgrades fluid catalytic cracking and alkylation units, improving the refinery’s ability to produce specialty gasoline for markets including El Paso, Phoenix and Mexico. At Robinson, the new flexibility project can add about 10,000 barrels per day of jet fuel production, helping MPC respond to growing regional demand. Management said these investments are aligned with its targeted returns of 25% or higher.

The next phase could provide further upside. By year-end 2027, MPC expects to complete a 90,000-barrel-per-day distillate hydrotreater at Galveston Bay, increasing the high-value ultra-low sulfur diesel supply. At Garyville, feedstock optimization is expected to lift crude throughput by 30,000 barrels per day, while another project should add 10,000 barrels per day of export-premium gasoline capacity and reduce costs.

Together, these targeted investments should strengthen refinery flexibility, improve MPC’s product mix and cost position, and help the company capture attractive margins across varying market conditions over time.

Other Energy Players Benefiting From Refinery Investment

Valero Energy Corporation VLO continues to invest selectively in projects that improve refinery flexibility, yields and earnings capacity. VLO expects about $2 billion of capital investments in 2026, with roughly $1.7 billion allocated to sustaining operations and the remainder to growth projects. Growth spending of Valero is focused mainly on shorter-cycle optimization projects that enhance crude and product optionality across the refining system. A key project is the $230 million FCC Unit optimization at the St. Charles refinery, expected online in the third quarter of 2026, which should increase production of high-value products, including finished gasoline.

HF Sinclair Corporation DINO continues to invest in refinery projects aimed at improving reliability, product yields and feedstock flexibility. The El Dorado vacuum furnace project is expected to support up to 10,000 barrels per day of additional heavy crude processing and remains on track for completion during the fall turnaround. DINO is also evaluating technology investments to strengthen competitiveness and sees further opportunities to enhance existing assets across its portfolio. These initiatives complement earlier jet-flexibility investments at Puget Sound and support HF Sinclair’s broader strategy of optimizing existing units to improve earnings and cash flow.
