Adobe ADBE is expanding Acrobat from a traditional PDF-reading and editing tool into an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered document productivity platform, strengthening its prospects across business professionals and consumers. The company’s Productivity Agent combines Acrobat’s document intelligence with Adobe Express’ AI-first creation capabilities, allowing users to understand, create and share information through conversational workflows. The expansion broadens ADBE’s productivity offering as Microsoft MSFT and Alphabet GOOGL continue to expand their AI capabilities across workplace productivity and document-related workflows. Adobe itself expects competition to intensify as generative and agentic AI expands into document productivity, understanding and AI-enabled workflows.
The Productivity Agent can transform documents into presentations, podcasts and social content, support conversational PDF editing and power sharing capabilities through PDF Spaces. Users can also create branded PDF Spaces with customizable AI assistants for sales prospecting, content marketing and research delivery. These capabilities expand Acrobat beyond basic document management into content consumption, creation and collaboration, increasing its relevance across a broader range of workplace tasks.
Growing adoption suggests that Adobe’s AI strategy is gaining traction. Acrobat and Express monthly active users (MAUs) increased from more than 700 million to more than 850 million year over year in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. Acrobat AI Assistant paid MAUs surged more than 150%, while lifetime AI users in Acrobat tripled. Acrobat AI Assistant annual recurring revenues (ARR) grew approximately threefold year over year. Business Professionals & Consumers subscription revenues reached $1.85 billion, rising 15% in constant currency, reflecting continued strength in Acrobat.
Adobe is leveraging Acrobat’s large freemium funnel to boost conversion opportunities. The company’s users span desktop Reader, Chrome and Microsoft Edge extensions and mobile devices. Adobe analyzes engagement across these free surfaces and introduces monetization opportunities around high-intent actions such as editing and redacting PDFs. The same conversion infrastructure is being extended to Acrobat AI Assistant, Express and Firefly.
AI is changing how customers discover document tools. Adobe noted that user intent increasingly begins with searches such as “summarize this PDF.” The company is using search engine optimization, search engine marketing and Semrush capabilities to direct more search traffic to Acrobat. Adobe.com traffic remains strong, while management believes friction-free onboarding can accelerate user acquisition, deepen engagement and increase customer lifetime value, though the strategy may weigh on near-term ARR.
ADBE Faces Tough Competition
Microsoft is intensifying competition with Adobe through Microsoft 365 Copilot, which now combines chat, Cowork, Autopilot and Code to support multistep, enterprise-wide workflows. Paid Copilot seats exceeded 30 million, with net seat additions more than doubling sequentially. Conversations per user nearly doubled year over year, while customers with more than 50,000 seats increased more than sevenfold. Microsoft is moving directly into PDF-centric workflows, with Copilot able to analyze PDFs and generate Power BI dashboards integrated across Fabric, OneLake, GitHub and Agent 365.
Alphabet is challenging Adobe through Gemini’s integration across Google Workspace and Google Cloud. Gemini Enterprise enables businesses to build agents, automate processes and connect enterprise systems, with nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies using the platform. Gemini Flash supports high-quality summarization and content generation, capabilities that overlap with Acrobat’s document-understanding functionality. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026, the Gemini app reached 950 million MAUs, while AI Mode surpassed 1 billion MAUs, giving Google substantial distribution to capture document-related user intent before users enter Adobe’s Acrobat ecosystem.
