Can Archer's Component Strategy Support Production Scaling?

Archer Aviation Inc. ACHR is balancing internal technology development with the use of established aerospace suppliers as it works toward scaling aircraft production. The company is focusing its internal efforts on technologies it considers important to aircraft differentiation while relying on external suppliers for other components.

Archer is developing key enabling technologies internally, including electric and hybrid propulsion systems, flight control software and composites. The company aims to leverage the existing aerospace supply base for components that are not considered differentiating technologies. This approach allows Archer to focus its resources on areas that are central to its aircraft platforms while using established suppliers for other requirements.

The strategy is also being applied as Archer expands its manufacturing capabilities. The company is ramping up production and testing across facilities in California and Georgia, with its Silicon Valley “golden manufacturing line” being used for early Midnight builds. Lessons from this initial production process are intended to support the design and ramp-up of the high-volume manufacturing facility in Georgia.

Archer's ability to manage this balance between internal development and external sourcing could become increasingly important as it moves toward commercial aircraft production. Maintaining supplier quality, performance, cost and delivery requirements while scaling its own manufacturing capabilities will be critical to supporting future production. A well-managed component strategy could help Archer expand manufacturing without taking on every element of aircraft production internally.

Companies Strengthening eVTOL Manufacturing Capabilities

As eVTOL manufacturers move toward commercial production, balancing internal manufacturing capabilities with supplier expertise and strategic production partnerships is becoming increasingly important. Companies like Joby Aviation, Inc. JOBY and Eve Holding, Inc. EVEX are also developing manufacturing capabilities and supplier relationships to support the production of their electric aircraft.

Joby Aviation is expanding its manufacturing capabilities while working with Toyota through a strategic manufacturing alliance focused on commercial production, manufacturing efficiency and production scale-up.

Eve Holding is also progressing toward aircraft production by developing its industrial and manufacturing infrastructure as it advances its eVTOL program toward commercialization.
