BLCO Gains European CE Mark for Next-Gen SeeLyra Femtosecond Laser

Bausch + Lomb BLCO recently announced that its next-generation SeeLyra femtosecond laser has received European CE Mark approval, expanding the company’s surgical portfolio in the European market. The platform is designed to provide precision and control during laser-assisted preparation for premium cataract, LASIK flap and corneal therapeutic surgeries while supporting efficient workflows in modern operating rooms (ORs).

Per management, SeeLyra builds on BLCO’s more than 15 years of experience in the femtocataract laser market and is designed to combine enhanced functionality with greater flexibility in the OR. The platform provides surgeons with precise surgical preparation and controlled conditions for premium cataract procedures while addressing space limitations and workflow efficiency.

BLCO Stock Trend Following the News

BLCO stock has lost 1.7% since the announcement on Friday. Year to date, the stock has gained 1% compared with the industry’s 1.9% growth and the S&P 500’s 11.4% rise.

The European CE Mark strengthens BLCO’s surgical technology portfolio and provides an opportunity to expand its presence in the femtosecond laser market. SeeLyra’s applications across cataract, LASIK and corneal therapeutic procedures could broaden its addressable market, while its compact and mobile design may improve adoption among space-constrained ORs. Regulatory efforts in additional markets, including the United States, could provide further commercial opportunities and support long-term growth in BLCO’s surgical business.

BLCO currently has a market capitalization of $6.16 billion.

More on SeeLyra

SeeLyra incorporates live swept-source OCT, enabling real-time visualization of the eye’s depth during procedures. The technology is designed to support consistent docking, precise positioning of laser cuts and visual control during laser application. The platform also retains features from Bausch + Lomb’s VICTUS femtosecond system, including an intuitive user interface and adaptability across multiple surgical procedures.

The compact design and absence of a fixed patient bed allow SeeLyra to be positioned and transported more flexibly within modern OR environments. Compatibility with existing bed configurations can also help streamline procedures and improve patient comfort by eliminating the need to transfer patients between beds. An articulating swing arm further allows surgeons to select their preferred surgical orientation.

SeeLyra’s European launch is planned initially on a limited basis, with broader availability anticipated in 2027. Bausch + Lomb is also pursuing regulatory approvals in markets worldwide, including the United States, although indications and approvals may vary by country.

Factors such as the growing adoption of precision-based ophthalmic procedures, rising demand for advanced cataract and refractive surgeries, increasing prevalence of vision disorders and continued technological advancements in femtosecond laser systems are expected to support market growth.
