Penguin Solutions, Inc. PENG faces a meaningful revenue headwind from the ongoing wind-down of its high-margin Penguin Edge business, which is expected to cease by the end of fiscal 2026. Management estimates that the Edge wind-down, together with the exclusion of hyperscale AI hardware sales, will reduce fiscal 2026 growth by approximately 14 percentage points companywide and 30 percentage points within Advanced Computing. For fiscal 2026, management expects Advanced Computing revenue to decline 15%-20%, reflecting both the Penguin Edge and hyperscale hardware impacts.
However, rapidly expanding AI-related businesses are helping offset this pressure. Integrated Memory revenues jumped 111.4% year over year to $275.1 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, supported by AI-driven demand, higher pricing and increased volumes. Together, Integrated Memory and non-hyperscale AI Infrastructure accounted for 74% of total company net sales and grew 104% year over year. This highlights the increasing importance of AI to PENG's revenue model.
This transition is not without challenges. The Edge wind-down and changing sales mix pushed non-GAAP gross margin down 360 basis points year over year to 28.1%. Integrated Memory also carries lower gross margins than the company average.
Still, PENG's AI opportunity appears capable of replacing lost revenue. Management expects fiscal 2026 Integrated Memory sales to grow 90%-95%, while preliminary fiscal 2027 expectations call for roughly 30% total-company sales growth. Recent MemoryAI and AI data-center initiatives further support this transition. Thus, AI and memory demand could drive PENG's next phase of growth despite the Penguin Edge headwind.
How Do Competitors Fare Against PENG?
Super Micro Computer SMCI is challenging PENG with a broader AI data-center offering, combining GPU/CPU servers, storage, networking, liquid cooling and software. SMCI booked more than $60 billion in new orders and targets $65 billion-$72 billion of fiscal 2027 revenues. Its expanding enterprise push and DCBBS strategy could intensify pressure on PENG as it works to replace Penguin Edge revenue with AI/HPC growth.
Dell Technologies DELL is challenging PENG through its massive AI-server backlog, broad infrastructure portfolio and global deployment capabilities. DELL booked a record $60.9 billion in AI orders and ended the second quarter of fiscal 2027 with $95 billion in AI backlog, while its customer base exceeded 6,500 AI customers. DELL's scale, engineering expertise and supply chain give it a formidable advantage as PENG seeks to expand AI/HPC revenues.
