Can 3M Continue Its Strong Capital Returns to Shareholders?

3M Company MMM operates as a diversified technology firm with a strong presence across industrial, electrical, transportation, consumer and home care markets. It has manufacturing operations across the globe and serves a diversified customer base.

The company’s commitment to reward its shareholders through dividends and share buybacks is encouraging. In the first six months of 2026, the company rewarded its shareholders with $813 million in dividends and $3 billion in buybacks. Also, in 2025, it paid dividends worth $1.6 billion and repurchased shares for about $3.3 billion.

Its worth noting that in February 2025, 3M's board authorized a share repurchase program of up to $7.5 billion, replacing the November 2018 program. This authorization has no expiration date. Exiting the second quarter of 2026, 3M had approximately $1.8 billion remaining under its share repurchase program. Also, in February 2026, it hiked its quarterly dividend by 6.8%.

For 2026, 3M expects total revenue growth (on an adjusted basis) to be above 4.5%. It expects its adjusted free cash flow conversion rate to be more than 100%, with adjusted operating cash flow of $5.8-$6.0 billion. The company’s focus on maintaining strong liquidity should support its shareholder-friendly policies.
