With nuclear energy a top priority for governments across North America, any progress toward that goal is welcomed by both policymakers and investors. Today, a micro-cap company focused on critical metals and battery technology made headlines with a significant graphite breakthrough, sending its shares higher.

Shares of Focus Graphite Advanced Materials Inc. (TSX-Venture: FMS) (OTCQB: FCSMF) are rallying on news that the company has achieved a major milestone with the successful refinement of graphite from its Lac Knife Project to 99.999 wt.% carbon purity (5N), meeting nuclear-grade specifications. The thermal purification, conducted by American Energy Technologies Company (AETC) at 2,800°C without halogen gases, highlights the company's ability to produce ultra-high-purity natural graphite through an environmentally safer process.

This breakthrough positions Focus Graphite as a potential supplier to the nuclear energy market, traditionally reliant on synthetic graphite, and opens a significant downstream market opportunity as the Lac Knife Project nears the final stages of permitting.

"Achieving 5N purity from Lac Knife graphite through thermal processing alone provides strong technical and commercial validation of our material," said Jason Latkowcer, Vice President, Corporate Development at Focus Graphite. "As global momentum shifts toward energy resilience, and surging electricity demand driven by AI, data centers, and electrification, nuclear power is regaining critical importance. Focus continues to progress towards our goal of supplying secure, high-purity natural graphite from a domestic North American source. Beyond the 5N precursor, we intend to further process the 5N purified power into specific market segments within the nuclear graphite market."

The achievement of 5N purity by Focus Graphite comes at a pivotal time, as investment in nuclear energy gains momentum in both Canada and the U.S. Ontario is building the world’s first grid-scale Small Modular Reactor (SMR), while the U.S. government under President Trump has prioritized revitalizing domestic nuclear capacity—intensifying demand for key materials like nuclear-grade graphite.

Anna Doninger of American Energy Technologies Co. (AETC) confirmed that Focus Graphite’s Lac Knife natural flake graphite reached 99.9992 wt.% C purity without halogen gases, using thermal purification at 2,800°C. This level of purity positions Focus as a rare natural graphite contender in a market historically dominated by synthetic graphite. With prices for qualifying material ranging from US$30,000 to $35,000 per tonne, further EBC testing will determine whether Focus' product fully meets nuclear-grade standards, potentially unlocking a high-value market opportunity.

Shares of FMS are currently up 10% at $0.11, while U.S. listed shares (FCSMF) are up 14.9% at $0.0856 in late-morning trading.
