Micro Cap Utilizing Antimicrobial Technology To Disrupt Multi-Billion Dollar Gardening Industry

If you’ve ever bought a plant that comes in a plastic pot with holes in the bottom, you’re aware of what a mess they can be and that one of the first things you need to do is get it out of that plastic. Back in 1980, tree farmer Ralph Reiger had the ingenious idea of using fabric bags for root balls, ultimately proving all the benefits of the technology and branding the company Smart Pot® (talk about a prescient moniker) that still exists today. Now, a company called BioLife Sciences (OTC:BLFE) is taking fabric pots to the next level by infusing the fabric with copper to reap all the benefits of the critical metal to improve plant health and yields.

In fairness, plastic pots have some advantages, namely being inexpensive and lightweight, but that’s where any value stops. Terra cotta and ceramic pots have plenty of root-growth challenges themselves. Fabric pots are superior from virtually every angle for developing strong, fibrous roots, easy transplanting, and eliminating any need for root pruning with the added benefit of having less of an environmental impact.

Fabric pots allow for water to flow through, minimizing the risk of overwatering rotting the roots and subsequent bacterial, fungal and insect infestation. They also obviate root circling, a situation where roots get tangled in a plastic pot as they sprawl out looking for oxygen-rich soil. With an oxygen- and water-permeable fabric bag, when plant roots reach the boundaries of the bag, new feeder roots appear, establishing a dense root structure rather than spiraling around into thin knots that die from malnutrition. This unintended benefit of Reiger’s fabric bags became known as “air pruning.”

Stronger, healthier root mass equates to abundant flowering and bigger vegetables and fruits (and potentially even additional harvests).

Last week, BioLife Sciences announced an industry innovation, launching their new antimicrobial copper-infused fabric pot. The BioLife Copper Fabric Pot is the first product being added to the Nevada-based company’s new horticultural and agriculture department following signing a deal this month to acquire Health Box, which will feature cutting-edge technology designed to disrupt the gardening industry.

BioLife is raising the bar in fabric pots by using its proprietary MFusion Technology that directly infuses copper metal ions into every sub-bundle of fabric. This means that each fiber in the bag can deliver the positive effects of copper ions to the root system. Copper is well known as a rapid destroyer of 99.99% of harmful bacteria and viruses, such as mildews, molds, spots, and more, while simultaneously boosting beneficial fungi and yeasts to thrive in the soil.

BioLife already uses MFusion in copper-infused antimicrobial air filters and face masks.

Copper is an essential micronutrient for plant growth necessary for enzymatic activities for chlorophyll and seed production and formation of connective tissue. The problem is that copper can be lacking in soil, owing to common fertilizers filled with macronutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus increasing the pathological symptoms of copper deficiency. In fact, copper deficiency in soil is an acute problem in the U.S., including in many soils high in organic matter. This leads to stunted planted growth, visible disease symptoms, and reduced yields. BioLife intends to correct these industry issues with its new fabric pots.

“We are very excited to introduce this new copper-infused fabric pot, which is compatible for both home and commercial gardening use,” said BioLife COO Nika Jaksic in a press release on the new product launch. She added, “Copper’s antimicrobial properties are well-documented; we hope this product will have a disruptive effect on a gardening industry that is extremely receptive to innovative ideas.”

Shares of BLFE are trading at just $0.47 each, equating to a market capitalization of $27.1 million, according to data from OTC Markets Group.
