Can Amkor Turn Advanced Packaging Into an Edge Over Competitors?

Amkor Technology AMKR is increasingly positioning advanced packaging as a key growth engine. With semiconductor architectures becoming more complex, packaging is moving closer to the critical path for system performance and value creation. This shift, combined with Amkor’s expanding technology portfolio and customer engagements, could help it strengthen its competitive position against peers such as ASE Technology ASX, while its relationship with Taiwan Semiconductor TSM adds another strategic dimension.

Amkor’s momentum is already evident in its financial performance. Second-quarter 2026 revenues rose 26% year over year, with growth across all end markets, led by advanced packaging demand. Advanced products generated $1.56 billion in second-quarter revenues, up from $1.23 billion a year earlier. Meanwhile, average factory utilization improved from the 50s to the 70s, supporting stronger profitability.

The company is also expanding its exposure to high-value AI and HPC applications through 2.5D, HDFO and co-packaged optics technologies. Its newest data-center CPU program began ramping in the second quarter, while Computing revenues reached a record and are expected to accelerate further on AI data-center demand and the HDFO CPU ramp.

Strategic partnerships could further reinforce this position. Amkor's 10-year agreement with TSMC and multi-year NVIDIA partnership support advanced-packaging capacity and AI infrastructure programs. Combined with its turnkey packaging-and-test capabilities and expanding U.S. and Asian footprint, these initiatives could deepen customer relationships and improve manufacturing flexibility.

Driven by demand for AI data centers, increased production of high-performance CPUs and the continued strong positioning of advanced technology platforms, management projects net sales of $1.95 billion to $2.05 billion for the third quarter of 2026. If these operations expand as anticipated, advanced packaging could become a crucial driver of revenue growth and competitive differentiation for the company.

How Competitors Stack Up Against AMKR

ASE Technology competes with AMKR through advanced packaging and test, including LEAP, CoWoS-related solutions and emerging panel-level packaging. ASX is expanding capacity as AI drives greater packaging complexity, while its pure-play OSAT model supports flexible collaboration. Thus, ASX directly overlaps AMKR in high-value AI and HPC packaging.

Expanding advanced packaging alongside leading-edge wafer manufacturing puts TSM in greater competition with AMKR. TSM plans to allocate 10%-20% of 2026 CapEx to advanced packaging, testing and related activities. This expansion gives TSM greater packaging capabilities, positioning TSM against AMKR in AI and HPC applications.
