Should iShares Morningstar Mid-Cap ETF (IMCB) Be on Your Investing Radar?

The iShares Morningstar Mid-Cap ETF (IMCB) was launched on June 28, 2004, and is a passively managed exchange traded fund designed to offer broad exposure to the Mid Cap Blend segment of the US equity market.

The fund is sponsored by Blackrock. It has amassed assets over $1.71 billion, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the Mid Cap Blend segment of the US equity market.

Why Mid Cap Blend

Mid cap companies have market capitalization between $2 billion and $10 billion. They usually have higher growth prospects than large cap companies and are less volatile than small cap companies. Thus they have a nice balance of growth potential and stability.

Blend ETFs are aptly named, since they tend to hold a mix of growth and value stocks, as well as show characteristics of both kinds of equities.

Costs

Investors should also pay attention to an ETF's expense ratio. Lower cost products will produce better results than those with a higher cost, assuming all other metrics remain the same.

Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.04%, making it one of the least expensive products in the space.

It has a 12-month trailing dividend yield of 1.18%.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

While ETFs offer diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk, a deep look into a fund's holdings is a valuable exercise. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

This ETF has heaviest allocation to the Industrials sector -- about 19.3% of the portfolio. Financials and Information Technology round out the top three.

Looking at individual holdings, Dell Technologies Inc Class C (DELL) accounts for about 0.86% of total assets, followed by Pnc Financial Services Group Inc (PNC) and Bank Of New York Mellon Corp (BNY).

The top 10 holdings account for about 6.79% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

IMCB seeks to match the performance of the MORNINGSTAR US MID CAP INDEX before fees and expenses. The Morningstar US Mid Cap Index comprises of mid-capitalization U.S. equities.

The ETF return is roughly 20.5% so far this year and was up about 23.44% in the last one year (as of 08/21/2026). In the past 52-week period, it has traded between $78.89 and $101.21.

The ETF has a beta of 0.99 and standard deviation of 14.85% for the trailing three-year period. With about 399 holdings, it effectively diversifies company-specific risk.

Because of this, IMCB is a great option for investors seeking exposure to the Style Box - Mid Cap Blend segment of the market.
