Kirby Corporation KEX continues to benefit from healthy marine utilization, improving inland pricing and an earnings outlook that points to continued growth. The question for investors is whether those strengths are enough to offset weaker marine profitability.
Cash generation and valuation add another layer to the decision. Kirby expects stronger full-year cash flow, but second-quarter free cash flow was limited, and the stock still trades above its own historical sales multiple.
Kirby’s Marine Demand Keeps the Growth Case Intact
Inland barge utilization remained in the low-90% range in the second quarter, while coastal utilization stayed in the high-90% range. Spot market rates improved sequentially in the low-to-mid-single-digit range and term contract renewals increased in the low-single-digit range year over year.
Management expects 2026 inland revenues to grow in the mid-to-high-single-digit range and coastal revenues to rise in the mid-single-digit range. International Seaways, Inc. INSW, an ocean tanker operator, also reported record second-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $345 million, providing a separate reference point for firm conditions in ocean tanker markets.
KEX Margin Pressure Tests Earnings Conversion
Marine transportation revenues increased 9% year over year to $537 million, but operating income declined 11% to $87.8 million. Operating margin fell to 16.4% from 20.1% as higher inland fuel costs and increased planned coastal shipyard activity offset the benefit of healthy utilization.
Management expects cost escalators and rate-recovery mechanisms to reverse the inland fuel-related margin headwind in the third quarter. Okeanis Eco Tankers Corp. ECO, which operates a fleet of Very Large Crude Carriers and Suezmax tankers, reported second-quarter revenues of $318.9 million and profit of $230.3 million, offering another marine-shipping reference point rather than a direct barge comparison.
Kirby’s Cash Outlook Supports Financial Flexibility
Second-quarter net cash provided by operating activities was $72.2 million, while capital expenditures totaled $71.5 million. That left free cash flow at only $0.7 million as working-capital needs increased with stronger business activity, collection and shipment timing, power-generation growth and higher fuel-related receivables.
Kirby maintained its 2026 operating cash flow forecast of $575 million to $675 million against capital spending of $220 million to $260 million. It ended June with $565.9 million of available liquidity and returned $59.7 million through second-quarter share repurchases, followed by another $29 million early in the third quarter.
KEX Valuation Leaves Less Room for Execution Slips
KEX trades at 1.9X forward 12-month sales, below the Zacks sub-industry’s 2.1X but above its five-year median of 1.6X. The stock’s valuation therefore is not unusually low relative to its own history despite constructive demand conditions.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings is pegged at $7.07 per share compared with $6.33 in 2025. Delivering that earnings progression will depend in part on better marine margin conversion and continued growth in distribution and services.
Kirby’s Signals Favor a Balanced Investment View
Kirby’s marine demand, pricing trends and cash flow outlook support the growth case, but margin pressure and uneven quarterly cash conversion keep the investment setup balanced. OEM supply constraints in power generation and subdued oil and gas activity add execution risks outside marine transportation.
KEX currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), with a Value Score of B, a Growth Score of C, a Momentum Score of C and a VGM Score of C. The Value Score is comparatively favorable, while the #3 Rank and C scores do not provide the stronger combination typically associated with a clear Zacks-based buy signal.
