C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. (CHRW) shares have plunged 30% over the past four weeks even as second-quarter earnings and operating profitability improved. The disconnect puts more weight on whether recent efficiency gains can hold through a difficult freight cycle.
The selloff may look tempting after better quarterly results, but cash conversion, leverage and valuation still complicate the recovery case. Freight pricing and capacity trends remain central to how much of CHRW’s operating progress can be sustained.
CHRW Q2 Strength Counters the Selloff
Second-quarter earnings of $1.61 per share increased 24.8% year over year and topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.53 by 5.2%. Revenues rose 19.3% to $4.93 billion and surpassed the consensus mark of $4.42 billion by 11.7%.
Adjusted income from operations advanced 19.5% to $263.2 million. Adjusted operating margin expanded 360 basis points to 34.7%, while operating expenses increased just 1%, indicating stronger profit conversion despite the weak freight backdrop.
CHRW Cash Flow and Debt Raise Risk
Cash generated from operations dropped to $35.9 million from $227.1 million a year earlier. A $227.3 million adverse swing in cash generated by changes in net operating working capital, driven by higher freight rates, was the main drag.
CHRW ended the quarter with $154.6 million in cash and cash equivalents and $1.68 billion of long-term debt. Debt increased from $1.34 billion at the end of the prior quarter, leaving balance-sheet flexibility as an important offset to the earnings improvement.
CHRW Freight Exposure Keeps Visibility Uneven
Management’s 2026 assumptions call for freight-market volume growth of negative 3% to positive 1%, along with continued market outperformance, optimized adjusted gross profit yields and ongoing productivity gains. That framework still depends on execution in an unsettled freight environment.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc.JBHT also faced rising transportation costs in the second quarter, with purchased transportation expense up 54% in its Integrated Capacity Solutions segment. XPO, Inc. XPO, meanwhile, reported 15.2% revenue growth and 43.2% operating-income growth in North American less-than-truckload, showing that freight conditions remain uneven across modes and business models.
CHRW Valuation Still Demands Execution
CHRW trades at 20.8X forward 12-month earnings, above the Zacks sub-industry’s 15.3X and the transportation sector’s 14.6X. The stock’s valuation therefore still carries a premium despite the sharp recent decline.
Its forward multiple is also near the five-year median of 21.0X, versus a five-year range of 11.5X to 33.5X. The decline has reduced the share price, but it has not pushed the valuation into an unusually low historical range.
CHRW Signals Support a Cautious View
The 30% four-week decline leaves the shares at a lower price than a month ago, but the operating recovery still has to translate into steadier cash generation. Freight volatility and a higher debt load keep the setup from looking straightforward.
CHRW currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), with a VGM Score of B, a Growth Score of B, a Momentum Score of B and a Value Score of C. The B grades are favorable within the Style Score framework, while the Hold rank and middling Value Score support a measured view rather than treating the decline alone as a clear buying signal.
