Spider Silk Has Been a Lab Curiosity for Decades; One Company Just Produced Over a Ton of It in a Single Month

Spider silk is one of the strongest materials found in nature. Pound for pound, it outperforms steel, stretches without breaking, and is fully biodegradable. While scientists have understood these properties for years, a persistent bottleneck has remained: Spiders cannot be farmed at scale due to their territorial and predatory nature. This constraint has kept spider silk confined to the laboratory, until now. Today, a biotech firm announced a production breakthrough that moves the material toward industrial reality. 

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories (OTCQB: KBLB) announced it produced more than 1.3 tons of recombinant spider silk cocoons in a single month. According to the company, this represents a new world record and five times its previous monthly best. The output was generated by genetically engineered silkworms, known as BAM-1 Alpha production hybrids, deployed across facilities in Vietnam. By inserting spider silk genes into silkworms, the company leverages an existing industrial biological process to spin spider silk proteins at scale. 

The company reported that the production ramp proceeded without disruption, with output meeting or exceeding internal benchmarks at every stage. Scaling a biological system is notoriously difficult, as it requires the organisms, specialized facilities, and climate-controlled processes to perform in unison. This served as the first high-volume pressure test for the BAM-1 hybrids, and the system held. 

According to Future Market Insights, the global spider silk fabric market is projected to grow from US$74.1M in 2025 to US$158.5M by 2035. These figures reflect a market in early-stage commercialization where supply has historically been the primary constraint.  

The material's physical capabilities were recently highlighted in a March 2026 feature by National Geographic, which demonstrated the silk's strength-to-weight ratio by using a lightweight loop to suspend a person and tow a vehicle. These high-performance properties are what make the fiber attractive for defense and aerospace sectors. 

KBLB is trading at US$0.1342, up 19.33% today. While the company is still in the pre-revenue phase at a commercial scale and the stock remains speculative, the jump reflects market optimism surrounding the production milestone. The next major catalyst will be achieving the 10-metric-ton target and securing confirmed commercial offtake orders at that volume.
